Clinton News Record, 2014-08-27, Page 2020 News Record • Wednesday, August 27, 2014 OPP NEWS BRIEFS MUNICIPALITY OF CENTRAL HURON - On Sunday August 17, 2014 at around 12:30 a.m. a Huron County Ontario Provin- cial Police (OPP) officer observed a Ford Taurus travelling east bound on Huron Rd (Hwy 8) east of Goderich. The Taurus was observed weaving within its lane. The officer pulled over the vehi- cle and spoke with the driver. The male driver displayed signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the Huron OPP Detachment where he failed two Intoxilyzer breath tests. A 23 year old male of Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh Twp. has been charged with the follow- ing Criminal Code of Canada offences; "driving while abil- ity impaired", and "driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in blood". He is to appear at the Goderich Court of Justice on Sep- tember 29, 2014, to answer to these charges. He was issued a 90 day driver's licence suspen- sion and the car he was driving was impounded for seven days. MUNICIPALITY OF CENTRAL HURON - On Monday August 18, 2014, around 9 p.m. Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dis- patched to an All Terrain Vehi- cle (ATV) collision on Fish and Game Line north of Huron Road. Investigation revealed that a green Polaris Ranger had been driven north bound on Fish and Game Line approximately 500 meters north of Huron Road, when the driver lost control. The vehi- cle entered the east ditch and veered back onto the gravel roadway where it tipped onto its side. Two of the male riders were able to get loose and away from the vehicle while a third male was trapped underneath. The Central Huron Fire Depart- ment and the Huron EMS removed the trapped 14 year old male from underneath the ATV. He was transported to a local hospital and subsequently transported to Lon- don by air ambulance for treat- ment for his major but non -life threatening injuries. The 13 year old male driver sustained minor injuries while the third male, 14 years of age was uninjured. All three males are residents of the Municipality of Central Huron. The Huron County OPP is continuing their investiga- tion into this collision. ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH TWP - On Friday August 15, 2014, shortly after 2:20 p.m. Huron County Ontario Provin- cial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to Point Farms Pro- vincial Park where a swim- mer was reportedly in distress. Investigation revealed that a num- ber of males had been swim- ming in Lake Huron at Point Farms Provincial Park. The males who were approximately 25 meters out into the lake decided to return to shore. One of the males remained in the water and swam further out. The lone male who was now approximately 35 meters from shore appeared to be in distress and was yelling for help. He was having difficulty in the rough water and was unable to make it back to shore on his own. Three males entered the water with floatation devices and swam out the distressed swim- mer. They reached the male and were able to safely pull him to the shore where he was attended to by Huron EMS paramedics. The distressed male, a 21 year old Township of Perth East resident was transported to a local hos- pital for medical evaluation. Water conditions at the time were less than ideal, it was windy and the waves were high. It is believed that the swimmer may have encountered an under- tow. Without the efforts of the three males this incident may have had a tragic outcome. The Huron County OPP wants to remind the public, that when strong winds are blowing and large waves are rolling in, beach goers and swimmers have to respect the power of the rip cur- rent (undertow). This is the force of the water returning to the cen- tre of the lake after hitting the sore. Very seasoned and capa- ble swimmers have lost their lives in the rough waters of Lake Huron. Experts recommend swimming across, not against a rip current, however the best way to protect your self is to avoid them all together by stay- ing out of the water when it is windy and the waves are large. a 1■ S n sae i ai•.•• als a a■ a e o i DISCOVER T E THRILLS AT OLG SLOTS T CLINTON RA EWAY. knowyourlimit.ca Play within BET YOU'LL HAVE FUN!
