her daughter and family
and was moved by the
beauty of its landscape. Dur-
ing her time there, she took
many photographs and has
since produced paintings of
them. As a result of the trip
to the Yukon, Hay has also
collaborated with her
daughter, Lindsay Muller
who is a photographer, and
has subsequently based
some of her pieces off of her
daughter's work.
Given her special interest
in nature, Hay is especially
well known for her
landscapes. As she says, she
"uses bold colours, a lot of
texture and enjoys depicting
strong light and shadow" All
of these qualities combined
make Hay's landscapes very
dynamic.
Hay is also recognized for
her portrayals of water and
takes the job of depicting
water as being wet very seri-
ously. "I love to paint water
so that it looks wet and light
so that it glows, the overall
effect being that my land-
scapes sparkle with vitality,"
says Hay.
Hay completed the Draw-
ing and Painting Certificate
Course at the Haliburton
School of the Arts in Decem-
ber 2011 but, otherwise, she
is self-taught. Hay's success,
then, is surely due to her
utter dedication to the trade
and, on average, she pro-
duces one new piece every
week. Therefore, she is seri-
ous about painting and calls
it her "retirement career."
She is also passionate about
it. Susan will be 60 years old
this Fall and admits that it is
wonderful to have such a
great passion at this point in
her life. The work, she says,
"makes you get out of bed
like a rocket."
Hay welcomes visitors to
both of her studios in Ben -
miller and Haliburton and
asks anyone who is inter-
ested in viewing her work
and booking an appoint-
ment to visit her website at
http://www.susanhay.ca/
and contact her at hayfield@
tcc.on.ca. She also invites the
public to an Open House at
her Benmiller studio which
is set to be held in Novem-
ber. The date and time for
this event will be announced
soon.
