OPP NEWS BRIEFS
HURON COUNTY - Alcohol was a
factor in 42 per cent of the 18 boat-
ing fatalities investigated by the Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) this season. Ear-
lier this month the OPP teamed up with
the Canadian Safe Boating Council and
enforcement agencies across Canada
for Operation Dry Water, a national cam-
paign aimed at decreasing incidents of
injury and death related to operating a
boat while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
The majority of boating tragedies are
preventable and everyone on the water
has a role to play to ensure it is a safe
and enjoyable activity. "We are all
responsible for safety, as boaters, cot-
tagers, guests as well as marina staff,"
said Chief Superintendent Chuck Cox,
Commander of the Highway Safety Divi-
sion. "Strongly encourage your fam-
ily and friends to not mix drinking and
boating before they head out and report
impaired boaters to police," added Cox.
Safer boaters understand that several
intensifying factors, known as "stress-
ors" such as sun, wind, waves and the
rocking motion of the boat can greatly
increase the effects of alcohol on the
water. One drink could change every-
thing; boating and alcohol do not mix.
Some of the most common offences
our marine officers identify are open
alcohol violations under the Liquor
Licence Act and equipment related
offences under the Small Vessel Reg-
ulations of the Canada Shipping Act.
In Ontario, the consumption of alco-
hol by anyone on board any boat
underway is unlawful. Boaters are
allowed to have open alcohol only on
boats with permanent sleeping, cook-
ing and washroom facilities built
into the boat's design and only when
those boats are docked or at anchor.
Whether operating a motorized boat,
canoe or any other type of marine ves-
sel, doing so while impaired by alco-
hol or drugs is investigated simi-
larly to driving a land vehicle and has
the same consequences. Impaired
operators face criminal charges and
immediate suspension of their driv-
ing privileges for motor vehicles.
Huron County OPP marine officers will
continue with dedicated patrols on Lake Huron
promoting safety through equipment checks,
encouraging paddlers and small craft operators
to wear their lifejackets and focusing on alcohol
enforcement and deterring reckless behaviours.
Get on board...don't drink and boat!
HURON COUNTY- The Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) has released a series of Pub-
lic Service Announcements (PSA) in an effort to
raise awareness about the important role life-
jackets and personal floatation devices (PFD)
play in saving lives in boating incidents.
Huron County OPP Marine officers along with
the Canadian Coast Guard responded to a call
last month where a catamaran overturned in
the choppy waters of Lake Huron about 400
metres from the Bayfield shoreline. In this
instance the two people on board were wear-
ing their life jackets and were safely rescued.
Another marine incident that very easily could
have become a fatality also occurred last month
when a Huron County Marine Unit spotted a
young male in distress in the water approxi-
mately 400 metres from the Lake Huron shore-
line in Port Blake. Officers rescued the kay-
aker that was clinging to his kayak in deep
water. The kayaker stated he fell out of the
kayak when he reached for his can of beer. He
then was unable to climb back into the kayak.
This kayaker was not wearing a PFD or life-
jacket, nor did he have any other safety equip-
ment with him. He was charged under the Liq-
uor Licence Act (LLA) for the open alcohol viola-
tion and was also charged for failing to have a
required PFD or Lifejacket on board his vessel.
The majority of boating fatality victims recov-
ered in OPP marine investigations this sea-
son would have likely survived had they been
wearing a lifejacket or PFD. The PSAs reflect
the OPP's latest efforts to reach out to boat-
ers and get them to wear this important life-sav-
ing equipment rather than just having it nearby
as many boaters do when tragedy strikes.
Three new, original PSA videos in vary-
ing lengths are now available on YouTube for
the general public to view (as well as linked
below in high resolution for professional use).
Audio -only spots are also available for inter-
ested radio stations at the links below.
The OPP strongly encourages News Editors and
boating safety agencies to broadcast/distrib-
ute the PSAs to help the OPP raise awareness
about lifejacket and PFD use, in a joint effort to
save lives on Ontario waterways. Feel free to also
use them on web sites and tweet about them.
