Anniversary committee announces brochure for South Huron Trail
The community committee that is
working to honour the tenth anniver-
sary of the MacNaughton-Morrison
Section of the South Huron Trail in
2014 has announced that one of the
year's major projects is now complete.
A full -colour brochure of the entire
eight -kilometre South Huron Trail has
been printed, thanks to a generous
donation from the Exeter Lions Club.
The 12 -panel trail guide includes a
map, trail history, trailhead locations,
and information on birds, woodlands,
plants, and other flora and fauna along
the MacNaughton-Morrison Trail and
the Morrison Dam Conservation Area.
Lorne Rideout, Co -Chair of the
Friends of the South Huron Trail, and
Past Chair Jim O'Toole have been work-
ing over the past several months to cre-
ate the guide. They were able to com-
plete the project with the help of local
photographers such as Bonnie Sitter
and with the support of the Trail Tenth
Anniversary Community Steering
Committee and Ausable Bayfield
Conservation.
Anniversary committee chairperson
Kate Monk expressed thanks to the Exe-
ter Lions and to the volunteers who
made the brochure happen. There has
been a desire for some time to have a
guide to the South Huron Trail for local
people and visitors, according to Monk,
but she said there was a need for a plan
on how to make it happen and the local

leadership to drive the project to the
finish line. "The leadership and hard
work of Lorne and Jim and the anniver-
sary committee, along with the gener-
osity of the Exeter Lions and our tal-
ented local photographers, have
combined to make this attractive, easy-
to-use publication possible," she said.
Be Tick Wise in Huron County
Humans are not the only ones enjoy-
ing the great outdoors in Huron County
this summer - ticks are out too.
The Huron County Health Unit
reminds residents that black -legged
ticks can be found in long grasses and
wooded areas. Infected black -legged
ticks can transmit Lyme disease when
they bite.
"Be `Tick Wise'," says Public Health
Inspector Keshia McDonagh. "Check
yourself, others and pets for ticks after
being outdoors, especially if you've
been in tall grassy areas or wooded
areas."
Here's how:
T: Two people checking are better
than one! Get someone else to
inspect the back of your body.
I: Inspect people and pets in a well -
lit area, especially after being
outdoors.
C: Check head to toe, including
groin, armpits and hairline.
K: Know what you're looking for. A
tick can be as small as a pepper
flake. If it has attached and
started feeding, it could be as
large as a small grape.
S: Successfully remove any tick you

"The brochure complements the edu-
cation signs and distance markers
along the trail."
The two volunteers behind the trail
guide explained why they took on the
brochure project.
"I thought it would be good for peo-
ple who are not totally familiar with the
find by grasping the tick with
tweezers as close to your skin as
possible. Pull straight out, gently
but firmly. Don't squeeze!
Cleanse the site with rubbing
alcohol or soap and water.

trail to have this kind of
guide," said Rideout. He said
it will be a help for people
who are newcomers to town
or visiting the area to shop,
stay, and hike. "Even for
local people, there is quite a
bit about the trail they might
not know," he said.
"I think it's a good way to
promote the trail," said
O'Toole. "There are lots of
things to see along the trail.
There's more to the trail than
just a good walk."
Copies of the trail bro-
chure are limited in number.
When members of the public
are done with the brochure
they are encouraged not to
throw it out or recycle it but
to pass it on to a friend or
neighbour or return it. Ausa-
ble Bayfield Conservation is
creating a print -friendly ver-
sion of the trail for the web-
site at abca.on.ca.
The brochure is one of
several projects supported
by the anniversary commit-
tee. The committee includes
representatives of several
community organizations in
South Huron. The trail bro-
chure is just one of the com-
mittee's projects. Volunteer
Dorothy Brown Henderson
has written a series of popu-
lar columns about the trail.
Volunteer photographers
Bonnie Sitter and Jim
O'Toole have been taking
photos over the past year
and are organizing photos
and historical information
for use in a DVD and photo
book. Volunteers are also
working on several other
projects to be announced at
a later date.
The committee is also
hosting a trail anniversary
celebration ceremony to
thank those who have been
part of the trail's success. The
event takes place on Satur-
day, September 27, 2014 as
part of the Harvest Festival
celebrations. The celebration
ceremony takes place that
day at 11 a.m. Other events
to mark the trail anniversary
that day include a breakfast
hosted by the Exeter Lions
Club at 8 a.m. that day and a
special hike (details to be
unveiled later!) at 9 a.m.
