HealthKick Rural Work Placement Program
provides students with valuable experience
Local students gain hands-on
experience working with local
healthcare agencies
It is the time of year for
HealthKick Rural Work
Placement students to
reflect on their experiences
working in healthcare cen-
tres across Huron County
and share with the commu-
nity their passion for rural
healthcare.
Since 2005, HealthKick
has offered Rural Work
Placement positions for
local students in collabora-
tion with local healthcare
agencies. Funding for the
student jobs are provided
by HealthKick and the local
employers. This program is
one of the youth focused
initiatives offered through
the HealthKick project. The
project is focused on help-
ing rural communities
address the need for
healthcare professionals.

helped fund 120 place-
ments and has had over 700
applicants.

ment Program provides
practical experience and
builds opportunities for
local post -secondary stu-
dents, interested in health-
care careers, to gain hands-

develop into aspiring young

graduating, these students

ing and working in our local

Alyssa Taylor is from
Varna and will be entering
her 2nd year of Food and
Nutrition Studies as Brescia
University College in Lon-
don in the fall. Alyssa's
career goal is to become a
Registered Dietician. Alyssa
was working as a Recep-
tionist/Quality Improve-
ment Assistant with the
Clinton Family Health
Team as a HealthKick Rural
Work Placement.
Alyssa's duties included
working as a receptionist for
the Health Team which
included answering the
phone, checking in patients,
and booking appointments.
Alyssa states she was pro-
vided with lots of opportu-
nities over the summer,
such as assisting with a
Quality Improvement Pro-
ject. Alyssa assisted with
implementing the 3 Visit
Project - which aims to
increase accessibility to care
by having patients access
care within the first 3
appointments available.
Throughout this job Alyssa
has improved her career
related skills and increased
her confidence within a
health care setting. Alyssa
enjoyed being able to help
patients. In the future Alyssa
hopes to help patients as a
Dietician by "teaching them
the importance of healthy
eating while promoting a
healthy lifestyle':
Alyssa's work with the
Family Health Team has
opened her eyes "to get a
better understanding of
how each provider in a
Family Health Team works
together to provide the
best possible care". Noting
that a Dietician is an
important asset to a Fam-
ily Health Team, this
placement has encour-
aged Alyssa's goal to
"bring my knowledge of
Nutrition back to a Rural
Community': Having a stu-
dent over the summer has
brought a fresh dose of
enthusiasm to the Family
Health Team. Supervisor
Kim Van Wyk says she
"looks forward to the day
when we hire one of our
previous students full-
time in their chosen
profession':
Nicole Middegaal is from
the Blyth area, and will be
entering her second year of
study at the University of
Guelph for a degree in
Applied Human Nutrition.
Nicole obtained a Rural
Work Placement at Huron -
view and Huronlea Home
for the Aged in Clinton and
Brussels, as a Nutrition Stu-
dent. Her experiences over
the summer have re-estab-
lished her commitment to
helping others improve
their health.
