Palmerston Marlins Novice Girls bring
home Canadian silver for Ontario
The Palmerston Marlins Novice Girls
team was one of eight teams represent-
ing Ontario at the 2014 Girls U14 Cana-
dian National Fast Pitch Champion-
ships held in Surrey, British Columbia
from August 6 to 10. Players on the
team are from Mount Forest, Cargill,
Chesley, Walkerton, Brussels, Drayton,
Moorefield and Palmerston. 21 other
teams from across the country partici-
pated in the championships including
teams from British Columbia, Quebec,
PEI, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
The week of round robin play got off
to a rocky start with three losses up on
the board for the Marlins. However,
the Marlins being the fighting fish and
in true Marlin team spirit fought back
to win the next three games and put up
some great scores to advance them to
the semi-finals against Chilliwack, B.C.
who had dominated them in the round
robin play. With everyone at home
cheering them on, the girls overcame
Chilliwack to advance to the gold
medal game.
What an amazing feat for a team
from the small Ontario town of Palm-
erston to be playing in the amazing
facility called Softball City and have a
chance to play for gold. Temperatures
rose to 30 degrees throughout the week
but the girls kept their cool and battled
the Delta Heat team from B.C.
The coaches, parents, family and
friends are extremely proud of these
young talented athletes for their com-
mitment to the game, their sportsman-
ship and pride in playing for our prov-
ince and for bringing home the silver
medal.
Not only did the novice girls bring
home silver but they were awarded the
team spirit award and trophy for their
tremendous spirit and support of all
the teams as they cheered them on,
gave out Marlin, Minto and Ontario
pins as well as gifts to each team and
for sharing their outstanding skill of
accomplishing a team push up.
Thank you to all of the sponsors,
including D&D Glass & Mirror in
Vanastra and MGM Townsend Tire in
Londesboro, family and friends who
helped make this incredible journey to
the national championships a reality
and memory that will never be
forgotten!
