letter to the editor
A big thank you to all volunteers
Dear Editor:
The staff at the Clin-
ton Dental Clinic and
the Lee Family would
like to thank everyone
who volunteered at
their recent Dentistry
from the Heart event
in memory of Dr.
Grant Lee. Together,
the team provided
free dental care for
over 80 people in the
one -day event. Man-
aging so many people
in such an efficient
and enthusiastic
manner would have
been impossible with-
out the unwavering
support of so many
people. I would like to
especially thank all
our staff members
who volunteered their
time to make this day
such a positively over-
whelming day for the
community. Dad
would be so proud!
Many thanks,
Dr. Veronica

An increasing number of complaints
about vandalism and night-time rowdy-
ism, particularly on weekends, may lead
to enactment of a bylaw imposing a cur-
few on Clinton young people. Late-night
noise and disturbances around the
Crown Drive -In on Victoria Street may
bring a bylaw requiring outdoor eating
places to close early. Both matters were
discussed by the town council at its meet-
ing last week and town clerk John Liver-
more was instructed to ask the Dept. of
Municipal Affairs for sample bylaws on
the curfew and early -closing.

Most people in the Clinton area
have always known that the Clinton
Legion pipe band was one of the best
in the province, and last Saturday
they proved it at the annual Fergus
Highland Games when they won first
prize as the best Legion band at the
games. For their efforts, they won a
large trophy and a cash award for
beating other excellent Legion bands
from Listowel, Orillia and Colling-
wood. This was the first year of the
Legion bands competition.

In a move which he later
explained as his opposition to any
further spending on the town hall
restoration project, Clinton Mayor
Chester Archibald offered his resig-
nation at the August 13 town coun-
cil meeting. In the height of a
heated discussion between council
and members of the town hall steer-
ing committee the mayor stated,
"What's done is done. I'm fed up."
He walked out of the council cham-
bers, later returning momentarily to
offer his resignation. In an interview
the following afternoon, Mayor
Archibald said he had decided
against resignation and would fulfill
his term as mayor of Clinton.

Plans are currently in the works for
Clinton to play host next summer to a
five-day literacy festival. Co -directors
for the Family Literacy Festival, Jennie
Girard of the Huron -Perth Literacy
Committee and Pat Senn of the Huron
County Board of Education (HCBE),
approached Clinton Council recently
to discuss plans for the festival, and to
request permission to use the fair
grounds from June 6-10 next year. In
an interview following the meeting,
Senn, a cooperative education
resource teacher, and the board rep-
resentative on the literacy committee,
outlined some of the proposed plans
for the festival, along with the idea for
its origin. She noted that Girard
taught literacy at Centralia College,
and also at Conestoga and Fanshawe,
as well as ran a literacy program in
Goderich.

It will be six weeks before customers
of the Royal Bank will be able to con-
duct business at the Clinton branch
after a Thursday morning fire caused
extensive smoke and water damage to
the interior of the building. Fire Chief
Tex Van Risen stated that the Fire
Marshall determined the cause of the
fire after a brief investigation. "We got
(the cause) pinned down to the pho-
tocopier," Van Risen said in an inter-
view Friday, although he admitted
that the exact cause of the electrical
fire may never be known. Hu Hoang
of Vanastra called the Clinton Fire
Department at 7:34 a.m. Thursday to
notify them of the blaze.
