2014 Summer Youth Olympics in China
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
Lexi Aitken, a young
woman from Clinton, is
without a doubt at the top of
her game right now. At only
16 years old she has shown
Canada what a very talented
athlete she is. Now she is
about to show this to the
world as last week she left for
Nanjing, China to attend the
2nd Summer Youth Olympic
Games being held from
August 16 until 28.
Last spring Aitken traveled
to the U.S. Area Youth Olym-
pic Selection Trials in Flor-
ida to try to qualify for the
Youth Olympics and she
won gold in both of her
events, namely, the 100m
hurdles and the 400m hur-
dles. Before that, she was in
Ukraine for the world youth
championships.
As her London Legion
coach, Sandy Cooper -Ryder,
says, "Lexi is a rare athlete,
so disciplined, in every
aspect, every regimen, in
nutrition, she's very dedi-
cated to working out every
day and she follows the
plan."
The Youth Olympic Games
make up an elite, interna-
tional sporting event for
young people and are based
upon the Olympic Games.
The main purpose of the
games is to bring together
skilled, young athletes from
15 to 18 years old from all
over the globe. The games
also include a Culture and
Education Programme
(CEP) which offers interac-
tive activities, workshops
and team -building exercises.
In particular, the program is
based on five themes,
namely, Olympism, Social
Responsibility, Skills Devel-
opment, Expression and
Well-being and Healthy Life-
styles. The slogan of the Nan-
jing 2014 Youth Olympic
Games is "Share the Games,
Share our Dreams':
The Youth Olympic Games
are held every four years. The
first summer games were held
in Singapore in August 2010
and the first winter games
were in Innsbruck, Austria in
January 2012. After Nanjing,
China, the next summer
games will be in Buenos Aires,
Argentina in 2018 and the
next winter games will be in
Lillehammer, Norway in 2016.
The summer games last 12
days and include 28 different
sports which can feature over
3,500 athletes. The winter
games last 10 days and
include seven different sports
which can feature over 1,100
athletes.
