KaylaThalen, amemberof the church, will be hosting a charity dance Aug. 15 at the Lucknow District Sports Complex from 9 p.m. to 1 am. The goal of the event is to raise money towards the cost of the trip, as well as the cost of building something sub- stantial such as awell, home or school. "We're trying to create jobs for many Haitians and give them knowledge that they can use in the future," Thalen said. "The way we do this is by hiring them to work with us on some jobs that we have going on. For example, in the past we've built schools, orphanages and houses.' Thalen said their team also sponsors children from many Haitian schools, where they help to provide them with education, food and supplies. "Donations are always accepted and appreciated," Thalen said. "They could include monetary dona- tions, gift boxes for kids, toys or clothes" Thalen said she and her father, Herman Thalen, have only been on mission trips to Haiti, with her first being in January 2011 and Herman's in 2000. "This trip coming up will be my second and my Dad's 16th trip" Thalen said. "We love Haiti, however if we had other mission opportu- nities, we would probably go to Africa" Thalen said what she likes most about the mis- sion trips are the people and the atmosphere. She said the people are always so grateful and that she just likes helping where she can. "My plan is to have a suc- cessful dance in order to raise as much money as I possibly can to put towards the betterment of Haiti," Thalen said. "I want to be able to build something big, like a well, to have some- thing to put my two -cents into' Thalen said she also plans to film a documentary while she's in Haiti so peo- ple can see where all of the proceeds are going. Thalen said those wish- ing to attend her mission trip must be 16 years of age or older. She said the Mis- sion to Haiti Canada mis- sion trips are open to any- one who is interested in making a difference.
