Municipality of Bluewater
Notice of Intention to Designate - Heritage Lands
In the Matter of the Ontario Heritage Act
R.S
R.S.O. 1990 Chapter 0.18
Notice of Intention to Designate
20 Bayfield Main Street North, Plan 147 Lot 175, Ward of Bayfield, in the Municipality of
Bluewater, Province of Ontario, and known as The Bayfield Archives Building Property.
Take notice that Council of The Corporation of the Municipality of Bluewater intends to
designate the lands and buildings known municipally as 20 Bayfield Main Street North, Plan 147
Lot 175, Ward of Bayfield, under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act.
The property at 20 Bayfield Main Street North is worthy of designation under Part IV, Section 29
of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value and interest, and meets the criteria for
municipal designation prescribed by Ontario Regulation 9/06 under all three categories of design
or physical, historical or associative and contextual values.
Description of Property
20 Bayfield Main Street North, Plan 147 Lot 175, Ward of Bayfield
Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest:
Design or Physical Value:
The Archives Building is a splendid example of a Georgian store front, with a delicate pattern
of windows on the front elevation and recessed double entrance door.
Historical or Associative Value:
Constructed in 1893 as a funeral parlour, the building has served the Bay field community in
many ways: hosting the grieving families and villagers when fishermen were drowned and as
the initial resting place for the bodies of the sailors lost in the Great Storm of 1913, as a grocery
store serving the Village and surrounding farms, and as a library and archives. The building is
now dedicated to collecting, classifying and preserving the information and archival records
that are of fundamental significance in establishing, maintaining and developing Bayfield
community pride.
Contextual Value:
The building was constructed in 1893 on the south side of the street by the Erwin family for a
furniture and undertaking business. When the prospect of building a new village library began
to materialize in 1975, the Bayfield Historical Society became concerned about the fate of this
building. Mr. Richard Moore, Miss Jessie Metcalf and Mrs. Elva Metcalf donated the current
property to the Village of Bayfield with a stipulation that the property be used for a library and
community Archives. The building was moved across the street. When the Archives Building
was finally habitable, the archival materials so painstakingly collected for a decade by Mrs.
Leroy Poth, and stored in a cubicle in the Town Hall, were moved to their new home.
The building has become the centrepiece of the Bayfield Heritage Conservation District. The
Archives Building is the headquarters of the Bayfield Historical Society whose mandate is to
protect the archival heritage of Bayfield and to educate residents and visitors about the
interesting events and people who shaped this community.
Description of Heritage Attributes:
Attributes that reflect the cultural heritage value of the building include:
- As an undertaking establishment, it was the initial resting place for the bodies of sailors
picked up off the beach after the Great Storm of 1913
- Moved across the street circa 1975 to become a building for archival material and attached to
the new village library
- The delicate pattern of windows on the front elevation
- The recessed double entrance doors
- The wooden boxed gable pediment above the entrance door including the decorated acorn
patterned fascia

Art exhibition celebrates Blyth
Centre 40th anniversary
The Blyth Festival Art Gallery is tak-
ing a trip back in time to celebrate the
40th anniversary of the Blyth Centre for
the Arts.
The gallery has been hosting exhibi-
tions in conjunction with the centre,
starting in 1976, with local artists dis-
playing their work in a makeshift space
in the basement of the Memorial Hall.
Since then art has been displayed at
the Festival and the individual works
have found their way into local homes,
as well as private collections across the
province and even internationally.
Among the great artists whose work
has been shown are London's Herb
Ariss, George Reid and Robert Bate-
man, as well as native artists from Man-
itoulin Island and some of the most
prominent makers of craft in the
province.
It is fitting that two of the founding
members of the Gallery, Ron Walker
and Jerry McDonnell are curating the
show, which will include works from
previous exhibitions as well as present
Gallery members.
They dedicate a special acknowledg-
ment to the late Dan and Marg Webster,
who Walker says, "bought a piece from
almost every exhibition we had."
Viewers can expect to see beautiful
examples of paintings in oil, acrylic,
watercolour and encaustic, photogra-
phy, mixed media, wood engravings
and woodcuts, zinc engravings and
lithographs, silk screen and collage. In
three dimensional work, there is stone-
ware, porcelain and raku pottery,
blown, slumped and stained glass, rug
hooking, fabric art, folk art, metal,
wood turning and carving, and other
media too numerous to mention. It's a
one -of -a -kind trip down memory lane
for the gallery.
"Celebrating 40 Years'; a retrospective
exhibition, is presented by the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery and sponsored by
Carol and Jerry McDonnell and Bev
and Ron Walker.
It can be viewed in the Bainton Gal-
lery (next to the box office) in the Blyth
Memorial Hall, Aug. 15 to September
20, Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 10 a.m.
to 9 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the
opening reception on Friday, Aug. 15 at
6 pm.
