This includes the staff and volunteers at the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre (HCFBDC) and on August 7 the centre hosted its first annual gala event called, Be Still and Know. The event took place at the Vanastra Community Christian Reformed Church and over 100 people attended. The aim of the event was to address the hunger and poverty in Huron County and raise awareness of the fact that some individuals and families in our community have a difficult time acquiring and eating healthy food. Because times are tough and money is tight for many, oftentimes people do not have enough money in their budget for nutritious food. For example, in 2011, 18,000 people were served by food banks in Huron County 4,100 of whom were children. The staff and volunteers at the HCFBDC wish to change these unfortunate statistics and they strive to make hunger non- existent in Huron County; all peo- ple in Huron County, they say, should have access to a nutritious, adequate diet. When board member and active supporter of the HCFBDC, Harry DenHaan, was asked who was in attendance at the event, he responded, mainly those "who have a heart for those who can't tend to themselves." "You have to tend to your own backyard," Den - Haan said. Guests at the gala enjoyed a 3 -course dinner which was put together by local chefs who use local foods. As DenHaan stated, the menu was created with the "100 mile diet" carefully in mind. There was also a silent auction where over 45 items were auctioned off and local harpists from the Huron County Harp School led by Sharon Johnston supplied the music. All proceeds of the event went to the End Hunger in Huron County campaign. The HCFBDC is not a food bank but, rather, an organization that acquires, stores and distributes food to the food banks and aid agencies located within Huron County. It also works alongside the Huron County Health Unit. "We believe no child should go to bed hungry and we are working with the local food banks and aid agencies to lessen the food insecu- rities that are happening to too OFFICE HOURS The Office Hours for The Clinton News Record is as follows Mondays - 9am - 5pm Tuesdays - CLOSED Wednesdays - 9am - 5pm Thursdays - 9am - 5pm Fridays - 9am - 5pm Qi Cli mews Record 53 Albert St., Clinton, ON PH: 519-482-3443 www.clintonnewsrecord.com many people right here at home," said Mary Ellen Zielman, the exec- utive director of the centre. Once the centre receives dona- tions of food from local businesses and farmers it acts as a clearing- house by sorting the food and then distributing it accordingly. The centre is located at 39978 Crediton Road in Centralia. The list of businesses and farms that support the HCFBDC is grow- ing longer every day, however, the centre is always looking for more help and counts on individual Tara Ostner, The Clinton News Record donations. People may donate online, by direct withdrawal or mail cheque or money order. It is also always collecting food dona- tions. The centre is a registered charity and, as such, it offers chari- table receipts.
