Last Monday night the
Blyth Arts & Cultural Initia-
tive 14/19 Inc, Royal Cana-
dian Legion, Branch 420,
Blyth and the Legion Ladies
Auxiliary to Branch 420
hosted the first National
Cenotaph Day at the Blyth
Memorial Community Hall.
The event honoured the
various cenotaphs that were
created to pay tribute to
fallen soldiers and all Cana-
dians who have served in the
military. 31 men from the
Blyth community in particu-
lar lost their lives in World
War 1. In World War 2 a resi-
dent of Blyth, Clifford Alfred
Taman, was killed by friendly
fire at Caen, France.
Around 50 people
attended the evening event.
Various presenters spoke
and among them was John
Stewart, a representative of
the Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch 420 in Blyth, who
gave a presentation regard-
ing the history of the Blyth
Memorial Community Hall.
Originally, the Blyth
Memorial Community Hall
was constructed to honour
those who fought in World
War I. The construction was
a community effort and was
ultimately built by voluntary
contribution. The official
opening ceremony of the
hall was on June 5, 1921. In
1946, a library was added to
the building and the roof
was replaced in 1974. In
1975 the hall took a different
direction by becoming
involved with the arts and
the Blyth Festival was cre-
ated by Blyth native, James
Roy. In 1990 an addition was
built to link Memorial Hall to
the Blyth Summer Festival
administration building.
Organizers of the National
Cenotaph Day hope that simi-
lar tributes will begin to occur
in other parts of the country as
a result of the day being
acknowledged in Blyth. July 28
is an especially appropriate
date to hold the event as it
marks the anniversary of the
first day of World War 1.

After crossing Canada in April and May of
2014, Bike 7650 will end its fundraising goal
as a part of Clinton Raceway's Family day
event, Sunday August 10 from 1:30-4:OOpm.
The brother and sister duo from Londesboro
ON, set out from Vancouver,
B.C. on Sunday April 13, 2014 and made
the 45 day trek across Canada, covering
7650kms in a variety of weather all in the
name of Canadian Tire's Jumpstart Program.
The goal was to raise one dollar for every
kilometer biked, never did they imagine they
would end up raising in excess of $40,000,
giving kids in this area a sporting chance.
The event coincides with Clinton Raceway's
Family and Fan Appreciation day. There will
be plenty of activities during the live race
card. Will and Claire will be on site for a
meet and greet and to say "Thank You” to
all of those who have contributed to their
success. A Jumpstart representative will say
a few words of thanks, and local Canadian
Tire owners will be on hand to show their
appreciation as well. Piller's will be giving
out free hot dogs, along with face painting, a
bouncy castle, mascot race and more.
Part of the day will include a Loonie Raffle for
both a girls and boys bike. Tickets are just $1
each and all monies raised will be added to
Bike7650's fundraising efforts.
Post time for the days live race card is 1:30pm
with events wrapping up at 4:OOpm, Due to
the early deadline of the holiday weekend,
this was written before the live races took
place on Sunday August 3, therefore, no
results from the card were available for print.
