Before heading back to class, students will need to pro- vide proof of immunization against meningococcal dis- ease, whooping cough and, if born in 2010 or later, chickenpox. Parents will not have to pay out of pocket for the vaccines. "Many harmful diseases have been nearly eradicated in Ontario because of publicly funded vaccines, but children and youth who fail to get immunized still face serious risks," Health Minister Deb Matthews said in a statement. "That's why our government is updating the requirements for school -aged children to be protected from vaccine pre- ventable diseases." The government is also issuing updated dose require- ments for tetanus, diphtheria, polio and mumps immunizations. Measles and rubella immunizations requirements remain the same, the government says. Parents are being told to double-check with their doctor, nurse practitioner or local public health unit to ensure children's immunization records are up to date.
