Keep an eye on the sky.
Environment Canada is bringing
their CANWARN weather spotting
training to Bayfield Thursday, May
1. The training comes in advance of
the stormy season as temperatures
get warmer and extreme weather
becomes more common.
The Bayfield session is one of 35
taking place across Ontario this
spring.
"It is a busy time for year for us.
This is when we start to get into
more active weather," said Warning
Preparedness Meteorologist with
Environment Canada, Geoff Coul-
son. "It's a good time to do the
training."
Since the tornado tore through
Goderich and parts of Central Huron
in 2011, the county has been hosting
CANWARN sessions to expand their
field reporting and give better warn-
ing of severe weather.
The main focus is severe thunder-
storms, those with damaging hail
and high gusting winds that cause
damage to homes or property. In
addition to this, volunteers are also
trained to spot lingering storms that
lead to flash floods.
Seasonal flooding is more the
realm of conservation authorities.
CANWARN is concerned with sud-
den events, likely caused by a series
of thunderstorms in short
succession.
"That's why the program is so
important," Coulson said. "Storms
can move so quickly. It's important
to receive credible reports as they
happen."
Feedback from previous sessions
has been very positive, Coulson
said, with more volunteers showing
up each time. Their 2012 training
saw about 60 people show up. Last
year, CANWARN sessions in Exeter
and Wingham brought out 80
people.
Among them is an increasing
amount of emergency management
workers, police and municipal
employees.
As information from CANWARN
volunteers is submitted to Environ-
ment Canada, they are better able to
not only predict the direction and
severity of the storm, but issue warn-
ings specific to the areas in its path.
There are more than 5,000 weather
spotters in Ontario, and Coulson
said as stormy weather progresses
through the province, Environment
Canada is able to call volunteers in
the path and alert them to have an
eye.
"(Monitoring) improves with more
technology at our disposal," he said.
"It allows forecasters to put out more
targeted watches."
The Bayfield CANWARN session is
free of charge and takes place at the
Bayfield Community Centre
at 7 p.m. Anyone interested is
asked to email Coulson at
Geoff. Coulson@ec.gc.ca.
