The future of Fanshawe
College in Clinton is looking
good.
At the April 14 meeting of
Committee of the Whole,
Manager of Workforce
Development for Fanshawe
College Tom Picard said the
college is optimistic about
its ability to meet the com-
munity's needs.
Since Fanshawe first
opened its classroom doors
in Clinton, there have been
650 course registrations and
just this past week, they have
a full time academic services
consultant.
"We're committed to this
area and want to see it grow,"
Picard said. "And will (allo-
cate) the resources to make
it happen."
This September, the col-
lege will be offering its first
diploma -level course out-
side of campus - Early Child-
hood Education. Picard
noted it is a significant step
for Fanshawe. The course
will accept between 15-25
applicants and operate for
16 straight months. Still,
Picard said, they are mindful
not to over -saturate the job
market.

REACH Centre as the college
expands, however, Picard said all
the current programs need is
"pretty much a standard class-
room." Right now, the most popu-
lar program at Fanshawe Clinton is
the PSW or personal support
worker program and like the ECE
program, there is a significant
amount of practical placement
training, allowing students to learn
on the job.
However, while there is enough
room for at least the next three
years, Picard said there is a limit to
what Fanshawe can offer in the
area.
One of the barriers the college
faces in expansion is in technical
training for trades school. Setting
up the proper equipment is an
expensive proposition, though the
college has partnered with both
the public and separate school
board for technical programs that
not only count toward high school
diplomas, but college credits
as well.
REACH keeping
rodeos fresh with
themed events

The best way to bring out the
crowds is to offer them something
different every time said REACH
Huron General Manager Matt Lee at
the April 14 meeting of Central
Huron Committee of the Whole. Lee
was giving his monthly update to
council.
The centre is looking to bring a lit-
tle broader appeal to its rodeo
events by adopting themes. There
are three major rodeos this year, St.
Patrick's Day, Halloween and New
Years Eve.
"For rodeos, the entertainment
comes from the theme so it's not the
same show over and over," he said.
"If you keep changing the program it
should keep it entertaining?'
Because rodeos are fairly special-
ized events, they bring their own fol-
lowing. The themes would create
more public appeal.
REACH will also be taking to the
internal airwaves, launching their
own radio station for the centre. Lee
said that way the centre can supply
its own music as well as put in their
own advertisements.
School is winding down for the
year for Ridgetown students and the
summer rental season is fast
approaching. Lee reported to coun-
cil there were 33 rentals in May and
from the long weekend through to
mid-June the centre is booked solid
and summer camps begin in July.
In the meantime, the REACH Cen-
tre is looking to become more acces-
sible, applying for a Trillium grant
for wheelchair accessible riding. Lee
noted he gave a tour to Trillium rep-
resentatives who were in the area
recently and while they had a posi-
tive impression, they noted accessi-
bility grants are is a very "competi-
tive field."
The REACH Centre welcomed 20
potential students during their red
carpet day and another half dozen
since. The outcome, said Lee, is
looking very positive for the Guelph
Ridgetown campus.
