Kelly Gruber Baseball Camp Odd Fellows card party
and dinner April 24
returning on July 14 and 15
Organizers
say first year
in Clinton was
a huge success
Signal Star staff
One of the top players for
the Toronto Blue Jays in the
early 1990s will return to
Clinton this summer to help
local youth hone their skills.
The Kelly Gruber Silver
Slugger Baseball Camp will
return on July 14 and July
15.
The camp is hosted by
Clinton Minor Baseball and
according to organizers,
"provides a great opportu-
nity for our region to grow
and promote the great game
of baseball."
Organizers said in a press
release that approximately
100 boys and girls from
Huron, Bruce, Perth, Mid-
dlesex and Lambton coun-
ties attended the baseball
camp in 2013.
The camp is intended for
children aged 10 to 17 and
registration can be done
online at www.gruberbase-
ball.com.
Doug Jones, director of
Gruber's baseball camps,
said this year they will wel-
come former Montreal Expo
pitcher "Spaceman" Bill Lee,
who became the oldest per-
son to play in a pro game last
year, and fellow former
MLBer Scott Bullett as two of
the coaches.
Several players who have
been coached by Bullett will
be helping out as well.
Jones said they had a great
time in Clinton last year and
the community really sup-
ported them.
In a press release, Gruber
echoed those sentiments.
"We are very excited to
return to Clinton this sum-
mer to run the Kelly Gruber
Silver Slugger baseball
camp. We received such a
warm welcome last year and
instantly felt like part of the
community. People always
think that it is all about
bringing baseball to the
communities that we visit
but for us it is also about the
experiences we have while
visiting and the relationships
we form with the coaches,
players and the commu-
nity. It is important for us to
come back and see these
people and see how they
have developed over the
year and to help them
develop further. Can't wait
to be back."
The cost of the camp is
$60, which is half of the nor-
mal cost due to Huron -Bruce
MPP Ben Lobb lining up a
number of sponsors, Jones
said.
Spots are going quickly
though, he said, as they have
filled about 50 already.
Brad Thompson of Clinton
Minor Baseball said it was "a
positive experience for the
kids and amazing to see 100
of them playing baseball on
the diamonds in Clinton last
year."
