Cougars roar to the top of cheerleading nationals
Gerard Creces
Clinton News -Record
Clinton Cougars Cheerleading's
All Star Competitive team took first
place at the Ontario Cheerleading
Federation Nationals the weekend
of April 5-6 in Brampton. In individ-
ual competitions, Tasha Hickey
from Wingham took second at
nationals for her tumbling routine
and is currently the Provincial
Champion.
The achievements are huge for
the small, non-profit gym, going up
against large for-profit city gyms
and with many first-year athletes.
Of the 25 girls on the team, 19 never
set foot on a cheer mat before this
season.
"It was a brand new team this
year," said coach Shell LeBlanc. "We

lost 18 girls last year because they
went off with college and
university.
We were left with six girls."

While the Cougars practice out of
Clinton, they hail from all across
Huron County and parts of Perth.
Some larger centres like Kitchener
or Toronto, have clubs with dozens
of competitive teams, which makes
it a friendly David and Goliath com-
petition, LeBlanc said.
The new team started competing
in December and their hard work
paid off in February, when theywon
the provincial championship.
However, it almost never hap-
pened. With about a week before
the competition the girls were ready
to back out for safety reasons. How-
ever, they never quit and instead
buckled down and worked hard to
finish first.
Due to the nature of the routines
cheerleading is an all or nothing
sport. All members of the team
need to be at all practices, literally
supporting their other teammates.
"The coaches put a lot of respon-
sibility on them," LeBlanc said. "It's
a huge commitment. They have to
show up for practice and become
family:'
It may sound simple, LeBlanc
said, but the Cougars' are a very
coachable team, eager to learn and
pound it out on the mats.
"Honestly, they respect each
other and the routine," the coach
said. "It doesn't work unless they
are all there and they are all family."
Coaches Kailley Wyjna, Deb
Young and LeBlanc are also looking
forward to the return of national
champion cheerleader Kelly Miller,
who is coming back to coach the
team after graduating Fanshawe
College.
The Cougars have one competi-
tion remaining in Mississauga May
10 and tryouts for next year's team
are May 13 and May 27.
