The Clinton and Central Huron
BIA have elected Michael Russo and
Tricia Renner -Robinson as their new
co-chairs for 2014.
The election took place Thursday,
April 10, during the BIA's annual gen-
eral meeting.
"To sum it up, we are dedicated
and passionate and want Clinton and
Central Huron to succeed," Russo
said during the pair's pre -vote
speech.
That includes supporting the
sports tourism strategy, pursuing
grants for projects and growing the
membership, he added.
The role of associate members was
clarified at the meeting. The non-
voting members pay a flat rate of
about $150 to get an associate mem-
bership, which entitles them to all
but voting rights in the organization.
The BIA has a levy of $27,000 for
membership within the area. Levy
amounts are based on square footage
for businesses. There is an expected
$3,000 on the 2014 books for associ-
ate memberships, down from $3,830
the previous year. Between the levy,
grants and event income, the BIA has
a total budget of $42,960.
Downtown beautification rings in
at $11,443 while events promotions
top the expenditures at $14,333.
Guest speaker for the night was
Jenna Ujiye, from Huron County
Tourism.
Ujiye outlined the marketing and
development strategies being under-
taken at the county level, noting
businesses can take advantage of
tourism listings through membership
in the Huron Tourism Association.

Operating on a budget of less than
$100,000, Huron County Tourism
competes against larger centres with
budgets four to five times that
amount. What makes the difference
in Huron, Ujiye said, is a strong vol-
unteer base.
She sited figures that show Huron
County receives more than one mil-
lion visitors each year, 94 per cent of
which are from Ontario. Nearly half
