Central Huron seeing 4.34 per cent decrease in 2014 tax rate Gerard Creces Clinton News -Record Central Huron residents will get a break on their tax bills this year, as the municipality falls in with the county and school boards in reducing their overall rates. The consolidated tax rate is down 4.34 per cent. That figure is based on a 4.62 per cent reduction (about $29.56 per $100,000 in assess- ment value) in Central Huron's rate, 4.05 per cent decrease at the county level and 4.25 decrease for the school boards. Central Huron's total levy for 2014 is $12,272,869, which includes county and school taxes. Total cash require- ments for Central Huron, meanwhile, are slightly up this year at $5,359,347. For the average residential home- owner, it means a $29.56 decrease per $100,000 of assessment value. The decrease comes after months of deliberation at the council table. When the original capital and cash require- ments were submitted in September, Central Huron faced a 7.34 per cent increase. However, as Treasurer Terri Rau explained, there were many addi- tions and deletions since then. At the time, Central Huron had not received their policing credit, and some road paving had been dropped from 2014 to create significant savings. "There have been some ins and outs but what I always start out with at coun- cil is saying here it is now, these are the projects we feel need to come forward," Rau said. "Some projects were moved to next year and next year we can look at them again:' Another unexpected source of income for Central Huron this year was the sale of their shares in the Erie Thames Power Corporation. Dividends had not been performing well on the shares in the last couple years, and council's decision to sell netted $904,008 for the municipality. Meanwhile, the cost of hydro is bringing up the price of street lighting. The user -pay system is going up for hamlets, who are still on halogen bulbs, while in Clinton there will be a reduc- tion in line with the LED replacements. Clinton rates are $48.26, down from $54.64. Auburn is at $52.52 from $41.42. Londesborough is $71.58 up from $64.09 and Holmesville is at a rate of $72.70 up from $68.22. As old halogen streetlight bulbs reach the end of their life, they will be replaced with low cost LED bulbs, eventually reducing the cost.
