It was a necessary respite from the stresses of university and eventually corporate lifestyle. I learned to love the soft pitter-patter of my shoes pounding the pavement every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday. I began to yearn for the fresh air to fill my lungs, to revel in the vic- tory of completing a character building run (commonly associated with a dreadful combination of wind, ice and sleet), to embrace the camaraderie that can only be felt on the trails (runners will know this simply as "the wave") and to rejoice in the occasional post - run indulgence. To get me through the winter, I learned to love the rhythmic hum of the treadmill. I even started dabbling in long-distance triathlon for some extra challenge. On April 15, 2013, the day of the Bos- ton Marathon bombings, I was in the height of my training for the Goodlife Toronto Marathon. I don't know a sin- gle runner that didn't feel a sense of solidarity for those affected by the bombings because we were all affected too. It didn't matter if it's a 5K or a full marathon or an ironman triathlon - race day is a sacred time. The anticipa- tion is tangible, the enthusiasm is infectious, the joy is euphoric and the accomplishment is life -changing. On April 15, 2013, an innocent gath- ering of runners fulfilling their wildest dreams was violated and I'm not going to try to understand why. I knew that if there was ever a year to BQ this was it. On May 5, 2013, I went all in - black Boston armband in tow - and came out on top of my goal. My Boston qualifying cut-off time was three hours and 35 minutes and I ran a 3:28:38 - six minutes to spare! I also placed second in my category - a huge surprise! So, here I am less than two weeks away from race day. Every season has its ups and downs and nagging injuries and this one has been one of the hard- est to trudge through. Along with 32,000 other runners I'll be joining in Boston on April 21, I have overcome the hill repeats, sprint sessions and Sunday long runs required to get me there. Together we will overcome April 15, 2013 and we will not be afraid.
