While the workshop and weekly meetings are held in Stratford, Divorce Care coordinator Laura Pogson noted they have many families from Huron County, including Clinton and Goderich that attend their meetings. Last week, she was traveling through Huron County to spread the word about the workshop, and hopefully reach out to divorced parents through- out the area. "This is a public awareness cam- paign. So many people are suffering from parental alienation," she said in Clinton Thursday. "Some people don't realize they are (alienating children) or how it ties up couples that are divorcing." Divorced parents need to set aside their differences for the sake of the child, and not bad-mouth or speak negatively of the other to their children. "It affects the kids and keeps the other spouse in a constant state of upheaval," she noted. "We see the agony of parental alienation but we also see the difficulties of single parenting and co -parenting." When the relationship is volatile between parents, it has an immediate effect on children. Divorce Care pro- vides ways to de -stress the children after visitations, and puts stress on making sure both parents let their kids know they love them regardless of their personal differences. The group has been active for 15 years now, and their April 26 workshop features Lawyer Brian Ludmer who will be speaking about managing legal cases, helping alienated parents and dealing with mental health profession- als. The other keynote speaker is Dr. Sol Goldstein, a psychiatrist and psy- choanalyst who specializes in parental alienation issues. Pogson said the one common thread that binds all parents attending Divorce Care is that divorce hurts, as does all that comes with it. She said the workshop is primarily for people walk- ing the road of divorce with parenting and domestic issues, but is also useful for social and children's aid workers. The biggest fallout in a divorce is usually the financial fallout from prolonged legal matters, largely due to an adversarial court system. "That's what Ludmer will be addressing," she noted. "Cooperating in the best interest of the clients and children. "If (parents) come to the day they will be able to connect not only with other people working in the system, we're hoping to have police representation there to guide them through domestic issues. We also have a financial adviser coming to help them set up their financial situation." The workshop is free, taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Army and Navy Hall at 151 Lorne Avenue, Stratford. IT'S NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK! On behalf of the girls in Ontario THANK YOU!
