The school board together with the Ontario Youth Apprentice Project, are offering Technology Days as a way to get students introduced to work in the trades, as well as encourage both boys and girls to explore areas normally domi- nated by the other sex. Construction, manufacturing, techni- cal design and woodworking, hair and esthetics, automotive and home econom- ics are all part of the roster, which includes 10-14 different activities. "There is a whole gamut of trades we see a lot of in Huron and Perth counties," OYAP project coordinator Tim Martens said. "It is right now a very good option in the way of job opportunities." With many students earning appren- ticeships out of high school, Martens said that reflects one of two things - either the high skills major programs are doing a better job training students or the market is there for hiring in the trades or both. Students will spend between 20-30 minutes per module at the event, some- times working on projects that span two or three different trades. Senior students will be on -hand to guide the Grade 7s and make sure all protective equipment is used and provide leadership. At the end of their day, students will be writing up an evaluation of the project and to date, Martens said the feedback has been very positive. "Sometimes kids make decisions based on that day," he said. "I can't say that I've had a kid tell me they never enjoyed the day." At the Catholic high schools, demand for trades programs has been on the increase after a bit of a lull. The tricky part, Martens said, is finding specialized people to teach the programs. However, where local skilled trades people cannot be found, the schools are able to bring in instructors from Fanshawe and Conestoga Colleges on or two days a week. Both the HPCDSB and the Avon - Maitland board are hosting different events aimed specifically at getting females involved in skilled trades, explor- ing non-traditional roles. "It's just one part of the puzzle to help kids make their future choices," Martens said. get itnline 411 clintonnewsrecord.com Get all of your news, sports and more.
