The long road to the Boston Marathon
Kirby Skinn-Jones
I started running about six years ago.
After 18 years of doing virtually no exer-
cise, it was the one thing I was deter-
mined to do. Mostly because it was the
one thing I could never do, no matter
how hard I tried, until a similarly exer-
cise -averse friend told me about a wallc-
run program she was using to work up to
running a 5K.
Fueled by boredom and a little jeal-
ousy, I gave it a shot and soon realized
that my problem was that I was always
trying too hard - so hard it made me hate
it.
Running really isn't that bad when you
start out running for one minute then
walking for two. Soon I was running two
minutes then walking one. Then five
minutes on, one minute off. Ten min-
utes. Twenty minutes.
Then my first 5K came and went and
10K didn't seem so unreasonable. That
ship sailed too and I was left wanting
more. I signed up for my first half mara-
thon - the Mississauga Half Marathon
Kirby Skinn-Jones with her husband
Taylor. Kirby will be running this year's
Boston Marathon April 21.
- in May of 2010. It took place about
eight months after I started running. I
meticulously followed a free online
training program for beginners and I got
my fiancee (now my husband) into run-
ning along the way. I even coaxed him
into signing up with me. It helped to
always have a training partner, however
indisposed he was to get up early on
Sunday mornings for the weekly long
run.
And May 16, 2012 came and went. My
first half marathon - my first ever -run-
ning race - and I squeaked by in just
under two hours. The very next day I reg-
istered for a full marathon - the Scotia -
bank Toronto Waterfront Marathon - in
September 2010 to commemorate my
one-year relationship with running.
My fiancee again signed up for the half
marathon event. If there is any race I
could recommend running first - this is
it. Even before I grew to know and love
Toronto, I thought this race was fantas-
tic. It takes place primarily along the
Lakeshore, 42.2 kilometres. The mental
game began and I learned to tap into
motivation I never knew I had. Pushing
my body and mind beyond the limits it
had grown accustomed to well beyond
any remaining notion of comfort.
In training I, like most recreational
marathoners, had only completed a 32
kilometre run continuously prior to race

day, so I had 10k of uncharted
territory to contend with. I
vividly remember a moment
in the St. Lawrence Market
neighbourhood surrounded
by the scent of fresh bread
and the friendly encourage-
ment of community resi-
dents. There was a turn-
around at the 32 kilometre
sign and after thinking, "only
10K left!" I started to look
back on how far I'd come in a
year, realizing that it was me
and my own discipline and
dedication that brought me
to where I was. That moment
is forever wrapped up in my
mind like a present, ready for
opening at the hardest
moments in my races and
long training runs.
Those last 10 kilometres
were the toughest by far. My
body hurt in ways I didn't
think it could and I wanted to
stop. I wondered why I was so
crazy to ever want to do it. But
there's a part of me that knew
not to give up that responded
to the enthusiastic optimism
from the crowds with an exas-
perated, forced smile, and I
pushed my legs. One foot in
front of the other - it's as sim-
ple as that when it comes
down to the wire. And then
the finish line was in my
sights and I was overcome
with the most intense emo-
tions I ever felt and I some-
how found the energy to pick
up my arms for myvictorious
finish line money shot.
I conquered the marathon
under my goal time of four
hours and immediately I
knew this was the distance for
me. I've completed four full
marathons - one every year
since 2010 - and I've learned
something about myself and
my limits every time. Qualify-
ing for Boston (BQ-ing the
holy grail of marathon run-
ning) became more of a pos-
sibility after each race, and
the training became less and
