Regional science fair winners chosen in Seaforth Whitney South Huron Expositor Have you ever wondered if temperature affects the bounce of a rubber ball? Or which nail polish remover works best? How about if beet juice can be used to melt ice on provincial roads? These and many more questions were expertly answered by dozens of Huron and Perth County students during the annual Sci-Tech Encounters 2014 Regional Science Fair held at the Seaforth Community Centre on April 3. Junior scientists from St. Columban and Clinton Public Schools, along with students all over Huron and Perth Counties, competed for the chance to represent their district at the nation level in Windsor. According to coordinator Laurie Kraftcheck, this year's crop of projects didn't disappoint, as each student produced some top-notch work, despite a lowered attendance. "As a whole our numbers are down, probably about 50 per cent less than previous years, but in terms of the projects themselves the quality is higher than it has been in the past and the research is much better," he said, adding this year students took time to explore a vast array of scientific areas. Noting a recent trend in projects involving com- puter technology and innovation, Kraftcheck went on to explain how important an event like the sci- ence fair is for kids today. "Students who participate in science fairs may not be the athletes or strong artistic students, but it gives them an avenue to express their interests and for some of them it begins a career in science, which we know benefits all of us." This year's Canada Wide Science Fair team members include Ethan Milne of Goderich District High School; Abby Parsons of Precious Blood School; Ryley Hiemstra, Jacob Jill and Ethan Elliot, all from Stratford Central Elementary. The Sci-Tech Encounters Science Fair is pre- sented annually by the Avon Maitland and Huron Perth Catholic District School Boards, as well as the Foundation for Education Perth -Huron.
