The CHSS boys curling team of skip Ethan
Doig and his crew of vice Adam Vincent, lead
Alex Vincent and second Sam Steep are offi-
cially the best high school team in the
province.
On March 22, the boys wrapped up their
season by taking the Ontario Federation of
School Athletic Association (OFSAA) curling
championship. The tournament was held in
North Bay March 19-22.
However, the final could have went either
way, with CHSS blanking the first five ends
against St. Michael's of Kempville. Neither
team had scored by that point, and with a few
misses by the Phoenix in the sixth and sev-
enth, St. Michael's were able to steal two
points. Going into the eighth end, the CHSS
crew battled back and were able to tie the
game at two.
Again, it was a close call, as the St.
Michael's skip missed his last shot, allowing
Doig to draw for two points in a 4-3 final for
CHSS. It was a mix of skill and chemistry that
helped the boys win, said high school coach
Carolyn Williams.
"This team has been together since public
school," she explained. "They've worked
really hard with hours of practice and numer-
ous games."
The biggest difference between this season
and last, she said, was the team's ability to
bounce back from a losing situation, having
the confidence and the ability to take control
and play through.
It was during the OFSAA tournament that
the boys suffered their first - and only
- defeat of the
year.
After taking
down Cameron
Heights 6-3 and
John McGregor
Secondary
School 7-5,
CHSS faced ESC
Therriault tak-
ing an 8-6 win.
However, their
final round-
robin against
Lockerby Colle-
giate Institute
was a 1-6 loss.
"It just wasn't
our game," Wil-
liams said.
"Sometimes
you're just off.
That what the
case with the boys."
Entering the quarter -final in second place,
the Phoenix squared off against Red Lake,
where a missed shot by the Red Lake skip
allowed CHSS to steal a point, and the game.
In the semi-final, Williams said the boys
played their best game of the season against
St. Maximilian Colby.
"If I had to put a percentage on it, (Doig)
hit 95 per cent of his shots," she said. "It was
still a tough game, they had some provincial
caliber athletes on their team."
The boys also took gold at the Western
Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associa-
tion finals, and were the first WOSSAA team
to win the provincials since 1991, when
