Entertainment & Leisure Home for the Holidays Blyth musician Kathryn Peach hosted her own Christmas concert at Memorial Hall on Sunday with the help of Wingham musician Scott Chow and, for part of the show, a full band. Peach said she was inspired when her friend and neighbour Annie Sparling took to the stage two Christmases ago and hoped to do the same. The lower level of Memorial Hall was full for Peach, whose powerful voice entertained all in attendance. Stafford and her daughter agreed upon some limits to technology use. Positive results ensued: "I noticed she was more present in main areas of the house, accepting our invitations to participate in games, cooking and conversation. Her disposition was cheerful, more relaxed and fun -loving. She began taking walks outside with her music, often inviting me to go along." More present, more with others, more alive. Jesus' words to His disciples upon His ascension at the close of Matthew's gospel underscore this purpose of His coming: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" Or as another well - loved carol (probably my personal favourite) "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" puts it: "Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail th'Incarnate Deity, Pleased as Man with man to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel" But Jesus Christ did not come simply to be with us humans in our sinful condition — He remained sinless Himself (Hebrews 4:15). He identified with us, sharing in our human condition, but for a redemptive purpose. "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the devil — and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death" (Hebrews 2:14- 15) Jesus our high priest was able to sympathize with our weaknesses yet also became "the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him." (Hebrews 4:15; 5:8) C.S. Lewis wrote a great illustration that involved children amusing themselves by playing in the mud. "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." Jesus walked the dusty streets of Judea like any other peasant, but (if we will trust Him) He did not leave us as sinners hopelessly playing in the mud. He is present with us, but He is also our Priest. A couple of verses before attaching the label of "Emmanuel", Matthew records in a heavenly messenger's words the redemptive significance of the Son of God's more direct name: "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Mt 1:21) Local Christian Reformed Church pastor Gary van Leeuwen made a good observation along this line in a discussion lately on social media. "Jesus, as the second person of the eternal Trinity, through whom all things were created, understands us better than we understand ourselves, and he did so even before he came to this earth... He is the Lamb of God who took our place." He was born, not in a king's palace, nor even in a middle-class home, but in a stable. Born in a barn! You'd have thought we might have afforded a warmer welcome for God Incarnate. But as the Holy Lamb of God, perhaps a stable is peculiarly appropriate. Grants approved Three projects have been approved for Huron Heritage Fund grants, including the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association. Elizabeth French -Gibson addressed the applications last week at Huron County Council's Dec. 13 committee of the whole meeting, saying that due to the uptake in the year's earlier application period, only $14,750 remained in the fund for the year. Renovations to the Kingsbridge Centre, particularly its stained glass windows, and the publishing of the East Ashfield History Book both received grants of $5,000, while the Threshers received $4,750. French -Gibson was asked why the Threshers received the slightly lower amount of the three applications and she said that in the regulations for awarding grants, organizations that have received a grant in the last three years should not be weighted as heavily as those that have not. She said that the Threshers had recently applied for and won a Huron Heritage Fund grant. This year, however, the group was hoping to put a new cedar roof on its log cabin. fob*. j/y •• j whop Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Coolers and Fruit Wine (Crew here or al home/) Ry 84 Kingston St., GODERICH 524-2323 1 = PARK THEATRE 30 TheSquare ..
