County to consider Carbon Footprint Initiative in 2018
Contined from page 1
Huron has invested $4.1 million in
private land stewardship projects
that have a water quality benefit. The
county is theoretically carbon -
neutral due to the reforestation
component of the Clean Water
Project," White said. "For instance,
the trees planted in 2013 through the
Clean Water Project will, in their
lifetime, sequester nine times the
amount of greenhouse gases emitted
by the county that year. There are
additional carbon offsets, such as
improved forest health as a result of
the Clean Water Project incentive
funding for forest management
plans by professional foresters or the
cover crop incentive, which builds
soil organic matter."
While what the county is already
doing is certainly a good start, White
said that there would be more to it if
the county wished to be a full-
fledged member of the Carbon
Footprint Initiative.
"The county is currently
implementing several energy-saving
initiatives through the conservation
and demand management plan,

opting for short skits and plays along a guided walk. One stop included Mary and Joseph or,

to stories and someone makes gold

Levi
"I like to go skating with my sister
Sierra. We go skating at the arena and I
like it because of all the fun we have
together. Skating is the most fun thing
you can do on the ice."
Dallas
"After we open our presents, we play
with them and sometimes we get
games. One time I got a mini soccer
game in a box that I like to play with
my family. "
Seth
"I play baseball in my house with
my sisters at Christmas. It's fun but we
get in trouble for playing in the house
sometimes."
Josh
"I like to play hockey with my dad in
the basement at Christmas time. I like
to play it with him because I play, and
we play with real hockey sticks in the
basement and I can pretend we're
really playing."
Hayden
"Half our family, actually most of it,
like, all the kids, all play soccer, but we
don't play it every Christmas. One of
the games we play every Christmas is
where we have a board and pick up
square things and put them on the
board. If we have three, we have to put
them on the right numbers. I don't
know the name of the game, but I like
it and it's fun to play."
Felicity
"I like to skate in London at the
arena with the whole Poortinga family.
I like to go because we get to have
candy there and I like skating."
Kyleigh
"We normally get a bin and fill it
with paper and act out what's on the
paper. We play with our family and it's
fun and we do it every year and
everyone laughs and has fun"
Emily
"My family gets to do our chocolate
Christmas calendar. The calendar has a
lot of chocolates in it. Sometimes we
have to answer questions to get our
chocolate. That's kind of a game."
Clarissa
"We have a soccer ball and a big
backyard so we play soccer in the
snow. I play with my three sisters and I
like soccer because it's my favourite
sport. That's why I love playing it at
Christmas."
Kathryn
"I go snowmobiling with my dad.
It's fun. We go to my cousins' house.
It's fun because we go on the GT sleds
after we snowmobile."
Brody
"I like to go sledding with my mom.
We have a big hill of snow by my barn.
One time I almost went all the down by
myself. I like sledding at Christmas."
Zachary
"Sometimes at Christmas we go
skating on our uncle Paul's pond. My
mom, my dad and my sister skate with
me. I'm not really good at skating, but
I have fun."
Avery
"We play a game called `Unwrap the
Present'. We sit in a circle and take
turns unwrapping the wrapping paper.
Whoever gets to the middle first gets
the present. Every year it's something
about the Jesus and Christmas story."
Kayla
"My family goes to Grandma and
Grandpa and play a game in the
basement. One person is a wolf and
they have to catch the lambs. It's fun. I
play with my brothers and cousins and
uncle."
Drew
"Sometimes, at Christmas we play a
Christmas game to make a snowman. I
play with my mom and my sisters. It's
fun because I get to play with my
family."
Gabriella
"I play hockey with my dad on Opa's
lawn. My dad, my mom and me play
with my brother and sometimes my
sister. It's a fun sport."
Micah
"My favourite sport is hockey.
We play parents against the
kids. My dad and my sister and
my brother play. It's my favourite
because I love sports and hockey
because we get cotton candy
after."

which is required under the Green
Energy Act," White said. "To
participate in the Carbon Footprint
Initiative, county staff resources
would be required to attend
meetings and draft and
implement a carbon footprint
strategy that could include
tracking the fuel use of the county's
fleet. It is the opinion of the
conservation committee that there
are additional energy-saving
opportunities that the county could
take advantage of, subject to
available resources."
The county will consider White's
report and further investigate
potentially being part of the
Carbon Footprint Initiative in the
new year.
