Christmas spirit is `palpable' in village A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Hum along now, "Do you see what I see..." That one and many other songs/hymns capture the mood of mid-December. Music is a universal language and we each take what we need from each festive song. Our history, our mood and circumstance of the moment, determine how and what we hear. The Bethlehem story over the years has sprouted many thoughts and songs that show the celebrations of life that we treasure. Advent is the time to prepare, to breath deep, to see real life and At the Branch separate the needs and wants for those we love. To be mindful of the things we do and be aware that our mood affects all those around, big breath and hum your favourite song. Catch the spirit. The spirit of Christmas is palpable. As the community gathers and putters about preparing for Christmas, a feeling wraps the group. it has nothing to do with the event details or the agenda of the group, it's the feeling that comes with this season. Sharing what we have, seeing the needs of others and giving with joy is what Christmas is all about. This giving comes in many forms. Concerts, parties and presents are how we show each other our feelings, all need preparation, time and thought. The result is a good time together celebrating the hope, peace, joy and love noted in this season. Shirley Clark died this past week and to me she was Christmas. Her bright smile and cheery "hello" made you smile. Her attitude of gratitude was every day and it never faltered when health or life offered surprises. Shirley was cheerful, helpful, quick to volunteer and ready to work. Critics were offered that same sweet smile, no judging just a peaceful smile, a hopeful word backed generously with joy and love. So really Shirley was Mrs. Advent. When I think of people who pass through our lives, the ones who leave the good memories are the positive ones — being kind, pleasant and fair. Thanks Shirley. Sorry Keith. Being observant at this time of year is a gift. Generosity seems almost contagious when you watch the blue carriers from North Huron Food share. At Foodland or at church the bins fill to overflowing in very short order. Watching children bubbling with excitement is such fun Branch activities set for 2018 Finally, it has been a quiet week around the Brussels Legion Branch. The storm last Tuesday cancelled the Cadet meeting. The rule of thumb is no school, no Cadets. They held their Christmas dinner on Dec. 19 with family invited to attend and enjoy a festive evening. The Thursday night darts had 12 darters out to play. Winners were: first, Ron Schmidt; second, Sharon Robbins and Roger McHardy; high, Ron, 10 and Gord Jacklin, 131. The Christmas party of fun darts and food will be Thursday, Dec. 21 and then the group will have a break over Christmas. THe Christmas draws were held on Saturday evening and it was well attended. There were plenty of lucky winners and entertainment was provided by Halee McNeil. Comrades helping out for the night included Andy Overholt, Nanci Ducharme, Judy Lee, Linda Bird Maitside Orchards 23 Orchard Lane (West end of Brussels) Christmas blessings from the Brouwer family "For unto you is born this day a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." Some folks enjoyed the karaoke music following the draws. The Branch will not be holding euchre on Saturday, Dec. 23 or a dance on Dec. 24. Regular activities will resume the first weekend in January. On behalf of myself and the Comrades of Branch 218, we wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Branch will be closed Dec. 25-27 and Jan. 1 to give all a chance to enjoy the holidays and a chance for some extra family time. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year as all the normal activities of the Branch resume. Merry Christmas! and the resulting smiles from all around are pure joy. Preparation with anticipation is what's happening in our world just now. So appreciate the efforts of all, their speed, participation and enthusiasm may differ from yours, but think positively and see the good in all people, now and all year long. Take care of your health, be sensible, smile and have a lovely Christmas. Holiday Blessings to you. Betty G.W.
