Blyth Streetfest discontinued after four years
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
After four years, Blyth's Streetfest
celebration has been cancelled.
The annual event hosted by the
Blyth Business Improvement Area
(BIA) was pared down last year to
run alongside the Blyth 140th
celebration and has been cancelled
by the recently -formed events
committee under new Chair Karen
Stewart.
The BIA executive was told
during its Dec. 6 event that Streetfest
was cancelled to allow the group to
focus on off-season events to try and
bring people to Blyth's downtown
core.
Events like the Festival of
Wizardry and Festival of Thrones,
both set for 2018 in and around
Blyth, will be focused on by the
committee. The annual Lighting of
the Lights will also be evaluated to
see if it can be enhanced and turned
into larger, potentially weekend -long
event.

The Blyth Business Improvement
Area (BIA) executive decided to try
and replace faulty Christmas lights
as soon as possible.
Shortly after Christmas lights
were put up throughout the
community, it was discovered
several strings of lights weren't
operational.
Extreme weather conditions added
to the problem as lights on trees
were damaged during high winds in
late November.
The executive approved a motion
to find and place new Christmas
lights as soon as possible.

Blyth Festival Artistic Director Gil
Garratt has volunteered to be the
new secretary for the Blyth Business
Improvement Area (BIA).
With the announcement of Blyth
Festival Director of Marketing John
McHenry leaving to become Artistic
Director for the Sudbury Theatre
Company, the BIA was left without
a secretary.

Come together
The Brussels Ministerial and its member churches held their annual joint Christmas concert
on Sunday night, this year at the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship building in the north end of
the village. Choirs from the Brussels United Church, St. John's Anglican Church, St. Ambrose
Roman Catholic Church, Melville Presbyterian Church and Brussels Mennonite Fellowship all
performed over the course of the night and eventually came together at the end of the night
for a mass choir presentation, which was greeted with a standing ovation. (Shawn Loughirn photo)
God makes
all things

Jesus and through Jesus God is
making everything new for those
who believe Him and trust Him.
Through Jesus God has provided a
way to be forgiven of our sin and be
reconciled to Him.
And through Jesus, God has also
promised that He will come again at
some point in the future to "make all
things new". That promise is for
those who trust Him now and
receive Him as God's gift of new
life. Christmas joy comes from
believing in what God has already
accomplished through the life, death
and resurrection of Jesus. And
Christmas joy comes in knowing
that Jesus will come again and
"make all things new" for those who
trust in Him.
The angel said to the shepherds:
"do not be afraid; for behold, I bring
you good news of great joy which
will be for all people; for today in
the city of David there has been born
for you a Savior, who is Christ the
Lord" (Luke 2:10-11).

The sale of Scrimgeour's Food
Market, which is to be renamed
Blyth Food Market, resulted in the
Blyth Business Improvement Area
(BIA) considering how new business
owners should be welcomed to the
village.
After a discussion about how to
recognize the grocery store's
previous owners, Don and Lenora
Scrimgeour, the BIA executive
discussed the fact that they weren't
aware of an official welcome wagon
program in the community.
Several suggestions, included
having a one-page outline of the
BIA's activities and goals from Blyth
Festival Artistic Director Gil Garratt,
were discussed.
No final action was taken as a
result of the discussion.

The Blyth Business Improvement
Area (BIA) is considering applying
for funds from Regional Tourism
Ontario 4 (RTO4) for the creation of
a distributable map.
The decision came shortly after
the conclusion of RTO4's
DestinationBLYTH project which
saw stakeholders plan for the future
of the community.
While it was suggested during the
final DestinationBLYTH meeting
that one of the presented ideas be
pursued, the BIA decided, during its
Dec. 6 meeting, that the creation of a
map of Blyth's businesses and
attractions be considered.
Plans include a final product that
could be available online or handed
out in a printed format.
The project was directed towards
the marketing committee for further
study.
