Majestic WI learns of scams
The Majestic Women's Institute
met in the community room of the
Brussels Public Library on Nov. 8 at
1:30 p.m. President Yvonne Knight
welcomed members of the Walton
WI and guests and opened the
meeting with a Remembrance Day
poem, followed by the singing of the
Institute Ode and repeating the Mary
Stewart Collect.
Secretary Leona Armstrong read
the minutes of the October meeting
and Janet Haertel gave the
treasurer's report. An invitation was
received from the Huron County
Historical Society to attend their
meeting on Nov. 15 at Holmesville
Community Centre. A letter was
received from the co-chairs of the
Lifestyles Tent at the IPM thanking
the institute for their contribution to
door prizes.
Leona Armstrong introduced the
guest speaker, Jamie Stanley, Huron
OPP Community Safety/Media
Relations Officer, who presented an
educational talk on scams.
Every year, Canadians lose
millions of dollars to the activities of
scammers who bombard us with
online, mail, door-to-door and
telephone scams. Scammers target
people of all backgrounds, ages and
income levels. In 2016, the Canadian
Anti -Fraud Centre reported $180
million in losses, a 15 per cent
increase from 2015. Fake lotteries,
internet frauds, get -rich -quick
schemes, dating and romance scams,
job and employment scams and
miracle health cures are some of the
favoured means of separating the
unwary from their money.
Stanley said he has seen the
devastating effects scams can have
on people and their families. Twenty
victims lost money in Huron County
last year.
One of the best ways to combat
fraud is to take measures to prevent
yourself from being caught in the
first place. Never send money to
anyone you don't know or trust. Buy
from reputable sellers. Never reply
to or open spam, just delete it. If you
think you have been scammed, call
the police immediately.
The roll call was: have you or
anyone you know ever been
scammed? Yvonne Knight thanked
Stanley for his presentation and
presented him with a fruit basket.
Shut-in boxes were discussed and
will be packed in December.
Smiles were given by Marie
McCutcheon and Leona Armstrong
and Lucy Hesse performed a short
skit. Helen Craig and Brenda Perrie
received lucky door prizes.
Following the institute grace a tasty
lunch was enjoyed, prepared by
Janet Haertel, Bonnie Lindsay and
Marie McCutcheon. Ruth Axtmann,
President of Walton WI, thanked the
Majestic WI for an educational and
enjoyable meeting.

Bluewater Mayor Tyler Hesse!, left, took Huron County
Council's annual Christmas Bureau gift exchange as an
opportunity to prepare Goderich Deputy -Mayor Jim
Donnelly for the town's new skateboarding park. The goal of
the gift exchange was to buy a gift for your fellow councillor
that he/she would have enjoyed as a teenager with all gifts
going to the Huron County Christmas Bureau. (Shawn Loughlin
