Sympathies offered to Mitchell, Shaw families PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 We knew it would come and it did. Snow arrived and some colder weather has now reminded us all that winter is ahead of us for the next three or four months. Slippery roads reminded us to slow down, shovels came out of their hiding places, salt sales went up and where is that darn snow scraper for the car? Boots, mitts, hats all had to be found and now we are ready. Winter is here! We extend our sympathies to the Mitchell families on the passing of Emerson Mitchell. He will be missed by his four sons Gordon, Ross, Doug and Neil and their families. Emerson was a life-long farmer, a hard worker, a soft-spoken fellow who had a calm demeanor, a quick wit, a smile for all, great patience when waiting for his late wife Phyllis, a storyteller and a man Jingle all the way North Woods Elementary School's annual Christmas concert featured some hockey themes as well as some traditional tunes. Above, primary students perform Jingle Bells during a dress rehearsal on Monday to help open the show. Karen travelled to Russellville, Tennessee to visit with daughter Sherry and husband Eric and grandson Fletcher, who is two. She flew to Knoxville where Sherry picked her up and they travelled to her home. The foursome then travelled to go on the Polar Express train. The group was on the first car of many of the fully -loaded holiday train. They received a bag of candy, hot chocolate and a Christmas decoration. The "elves" on the train told a Christmas story through song and dance to the delight of the riders on the two-hour journey. The ride finished up with the arrival of Santa. Karen's next adventure was to accompany the family on the journey to Tilden, Alabama to the home of Eric's parents to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. It was an eight-hour drive because of the overload of traffic. The next day they headed to Nashville to stay at the Bob Evans Hotel. They went to the Christmas Cirque du Soleil show and it was excellent, featuring great costumes and music. They returned to Tilden to celebrate Eric's father's birthday and finally on Sunday they returned to Russellville. It was a wonderful week away with lots of time spent with her cute little grandson Fletcher. Members of the Alexander family travelled to Alberta for a special occasion in the family. Bob and Joyce Alexander and Donna Knight went to attend the 50th wedding anniversary party for their brother John and Lois Alexander. They flew to Calgary and then rented a car and Deer hunters celebrate successful trips Another successful week of deer hunting has concluded and there are a few less deer around. The Blake crew managed to get 10, the Dalton crew, at last count, was at 13. The VanBeek crew had four and the Fritz crew had four as well. Those numbers could have easily went up on the last day of the hunt. I could have added one to my count as a deer tried to run into the side of the bus one afternoon, but I managed to slow up quickly enough that it managed to cross without incident. Whew! Judy Emmrich has returned from a trip to New York City with Becky Janmaat. They attended a women's conference for two days. After hours they walked along Fifth Avenue, Times Square and saw the lights at the Rockefeller Center. They were away four days and had a great time. The Smith family is wrapping up their time with exchange student Lucas from Spain. He enjoyed a trip to Niagara Falls on the weekend with the family and all the Smith family gathered for a final family meal with him. He has one last week of curling to enjoy. His classmates are planning a farewell party for him in Friday and Christmas tunes As part of the annual community Christmas choral concert hosted by the Brussels Ministerial on Sunday, St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church's choir performed at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship in the north end of the village. All of the choirs performing that night would again grace the stage at the end of the night for a handful of songs together. (Shawn Loughlin photo) he will be gone before the weekend is over. He has really enjoyed his time in Canada and loved the snow. Celebrating birthday this past week were Lorraine Blake, Aleah Haggitt, Glenda Morrison, MacKenzie Gulutzen, Darian Fritz, Brook Beuerman, Gary Ritchie, Evan Ducharme, Cheryl Mader, Margaret Whitmore, Emma Taylor and Destiny Dunbar. Happy birthday to all! FROM WALTON went to Cardston, Alberta to enjoy four days with family. They enjoyed a delicious meal and program for the gathering to celebrate the occasion. The Alexanders — John, Bob and Donna — went for a tour of the area one afternoon, while Joyce stayed and had a great visit with Lois. The trio returned home after having a wonderful time. Our sympathies are extended to the family of Charlie Shaw on his passing. He will be missed by children Brenda and Ann and sister Nora Stephenson of Brussels and their families. Our condolences to all. The McDonald and Jarosz families gathered on Sunday to celebrate Connor Jarosz's fifth birthday. There were 12 family members that went on the Santa Train from St. Jacobs for the hour- long ride. Musical entertainment of Christmas songs, elves with small gifts for the children and of course a visit with Santa on the train were all enjoyed. We returned to the Jarosz home for supper and birthday cake following the ride! The Walton Hall was the venue for the Machan family Christmas. The family gathers for a meal and then an evening of family festivities. Alpaca Products Maple Moose 398 Queen St., Blyth 519-523-4276 It's That Time Again! Don't get snowed.n this Winter Call D.C.
