Blyth mourns
Shaw's passing

Hullett Central Public School's best Christmas spirit was scheduled to be on display
Wednesday night with its annual Christmas concert. Above, Kindergarten students perform
the "Reindeer Pokey", a variation on the "Hokey Pokey" during a dress rehearsal for the
concert on Monday morning. From left: Joel Fleet, Courtney Bergsma, Callie Gibbings, Lauren

Church seeks socks, underwear
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church of the second Sunday
of Advent, Dec. 19 was Mary Lou
Stewart. Ushering were Laurie
Sparling and John Stewart. Marilyn
Scott was pianist and Katie
Dockstader, choir director. Lavern
Clark ran the power point.
Hillary MacDonald welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin with special
mention that next Sunday we will be
collecting socks and underwear for
the women's shelter in Goderich. We
are looking for 100 pairs of new
socks and new underwear. We only
have about 30 pair to go. She also
mentioned the Community Kitchen
will be on Friday, Dec. 15 at Blyth
United Church. Everyone is invited
to come and share in the joy of
cooking a meal together.
Hillary invited everyone to greet
one another. The first hymn "Come,
Thou Long -Expected Jesus" was
sung, followed by John and Mary
Lou Stewart lighting the Advent
Candles of Hope and Peace. Two
verses of the hymn "A Candle is
Burning" were sung. The prayer of
approach was followed by a short
Advent video depicting peace. Some
people find peace in the kitchen, in
cooking a meal for others. Even
washing a sink full of dishes is a
pleasure because if the sink is full of
dishes it means that we have been
fed. Hillary had a cake pan, cake mix
and a can of icing in her hands. She
said that when you open the cake
mix, dump it into a bowl, add the
water or milk, eggs and vegetable oil
and mix it well, put it into the pan
and put into the oven for 30 minutes,
out comes a beautiful cake that you
add the icing and a delicious dessert
appears.
We are a part of the Christmas
story and are preparing the way of
the Lord, the sweet baby Jesus. The
hymn "People, Look East" was
sung. The scripture reading was
from Mark 1: 1-8. The choir sang the
anthem "Mary's Little Boy Child"
directed by Katie Dockstader and
accompanied by John McDowell
with the guitar.
Hillary told the congregation that
you can usually tell the story of a
movie by its beginning. In the
beginning of the story of Jesus, the
angels come to Mary and tell her she
is going to have a baby and she gives
birth to a baby boy whom they called
Jesus.
The Gospel of Mark doesn't begin
with the birth of Jesus, it begins
with the story of John the Baptist
living in the wilderness. Many
people came to the wilderness to be
baptized by John. What does the
wilderness mean to you? It is a
place were you can get hurt, it is
also a quiet place; a place outside
the city. A place where God will
show up. We have a place in God's
story and it is only a beginning.
The hymn "'Twas in the Moon Of
Wintertime" was followed by the
receiving of the offering, the
offertory response "What Can I
Do?" and the offertory prayer.
Hillary invited Pastor Sandra Cable
to assist at the Lord's Table. The
hymn "0 Come, 0 Come
Emmanuel" was sung. Emily
Phillips, Mary Lou and John
Stewart, Doug Howson and Gwen
Papple served the communion
elements.
The hymn "Good Christian
Friends, Rejoice" was followed by
the benediction and the singing of
the response "I am Walking the Path
of Peace"
Everyone was invited for coffee
and fellowship before going home.

In this precious Book!
(John Newton)
"From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to
make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All
Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness --that the man of
God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work!" 2
Timothy 3:15-17
Set a high value upon the Word of God. All that is necessary to make you
wise to salvation is there --and there alone.
In this precious Book, you may find...
a direction for every doubt
a solution of every difficulty, and
a promise suited to every circumstance you can be in.
There you may be informed of your disease caused by sin --and the
remedy provided by grace.
In the Scriptures, you may be instructed to know...
yourselves,
Jesus Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and
knowledge,
the wonders of redeeming love,
the glories of the Redeemer's person,
the happiness of the redeemed people,
the power of faith, and
the beauty of holiness.
All are here fully and clearly represented.
Nothing is lacking in the Scriptures to make...
life useful and comfortable,
death safe and desirable, and
to bring down something of Heaven upon earth.
But this true wisdom can be found nowhere else. If you wander from the
Scriptures, in pursuit either of present peace, or future hope --then your
search will surely end in disappointment.
This is the fountain of living waters! If you forsake it, and give the
preference to broken cisterns of your own devising --then they will fail
you when you most need them.
Rejoice, therefore, that such a treasure is put into your hand --but rejoice
with trembling. Remember this is not all you need --unless God likewise
gives you a heart to use the Scriptures aright --then your privilege will
only aggravate your guilt and misery.
A Grace Gem
