Community churches come together for Christmas
The most wonderful time of the year
The annual Brussels community Christmas concert was hosted by the Brussels Ministerial on
Sunday. The event rotates annually through the community and was held at the Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship this Christmas. It featured choirs from the churches throughout Brussels
singing independently, as well as in a group finale. Above, the Brussels United Church Choir

Why, yes, of course Hark is
beautiful! We were in Edmonton last
week to do the baby check and like
any grandparent, we found him
flawless and definitely a keeper. Phil
and Lauren are adjusting to
parenting and, like all first babies,
Hark is making sure they are
challenged regularly to the ever-
changing requirements of a
newborn. Robyn from Listowel
came with us to do the initial check
of Hark and she too is smitten.
The spirit of Christmas is
increasing as the days flow along.
The many nice things that happen at
this time are such a joy to behold.
Calls, visits, gifts and entertainment
seem to flow as groups,
organizations and individuals stop
and see beyond themselves. Now, if
only we could remember to do those
same nice things in February, April
or November. Living the Advent
At the Branch
Season events keep Branch busy
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It was another busy week at the
Brussels Legion Branch. The
Brussels Agromart held its growers
meal and meeting on Thursday
evening. There were close to 100
people in attedance to enjoy the
roast beef dinner provided by the
Branch. The evening continued with
a variety of guest speakers and
concluded with draws and a social
time.
Branch Comrades helping for the
evening included Judy Lee, Deb
Cann, Linda Bird, Glenn Bridge, Jo-
Ann McDonald and Catrina Josling.
Student volunteer helpers were
Sarah Alexander and Justin
Morrison.
The Thursday night darts had 12
darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Sandra Josling
Brown and Sam Smith; second,
Roger McHardy and Catrina Josling
and high shot, Krysta Bujold, 127.
Friday night, the Branch was
cooking again for the Brussels
Agromart staff Christmas party.
There were 40 people in attendance
to enjoy the chicken entree and
additions. The group then enjoyed a
social evening of darts and cards.
Branch helpers included Sandra
Josling Brown, Mabel Glanville,
Deb Ross and Nanci Ducharme.
The Branch was the venue for the
celebration of life for George
Somers on Saturday. There was a
lovely gathering of extended family
and friends who dropped by to visit
with the family and enjoy a time of
friendship and stories. Our
condolences to the Somers
family. Branch helpers included
Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith,
Jo -Ann McDonald, Judy Lee,
Mabel Glanville, Mary
Bradshaw, Perry and Julie Pearce.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
was organized by Dianne Huether
and Deb Cann in the absence of
Glenn Bridge. There were eight
tables of players. Winners were:
first, Bruce and Joan, 78; second,
Anne Laidlaw and Joyce Hodgins,
70; third, Iven Bennewies and Vera
Ahrens, 68; lone hands, Eleanor
Granger and Lloyd Townsend, five
and low score, Hazel McGonigle
and Janet Davies, 42.
The Sunday night dance was the
final dance of the 2017 year. The
Tri -Country band provided excellent
music for the small crowd due to the
adverse weather conditions. They
had a great time with plenty of
room on the dance floor and almost
all went home with a small door
prize.

words of joy, hope, peace and love
all year through would be a real gift
to all.
The choirs of Brussels did their
Christmas thing on Sunday evening
at the Mennonite Fellowship. Co-
ordinated by the Brussels
Ministerial, this evening of
wonderful music has become a
tradition for our village as a way to
share the joy of song and love of the
season. The audience always
appreciates the different styles of
music offered by the choirs. Thank
you.
A smile is a gift anyone can give
and when I think of George Somers,
I think of his smile that started in his
eyes and spread. Over the years that
twinkle, some well-placed words
and the smile kept you alert. George
had a way of making you pay
attention and if you were wise you
did, or the laugh might be on you, or
worse you might miss the point.
So goodbye George, you leave lots
of us with good memories and a
smile.
There goes Emerson. For many
years each morning we watched his
blue truck head south to check the
farm. His life was the land, and
when their spot in the village just
wasn't enough, he'd go to the
familiar Walton areas and be content
just to look. The serenity he showed
let people relax and enjoy a visit. He
was an example of changing with the
ages and making the best of each
day. Phyllis will be happy to see you
and we'll keep the memories going.
Be sure to enjoy all the fun of this
time. Remembering no one really
cares how frazzled you get over
details that won't matter in six
months, they will recall if you were
pleasant and fun company.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
