M -T company's rezoning app. could be contested By Denny Scott The Citizen After having a rezoning application deferred to prevent future problems, Canada Crane Company in Morris-Turnberry could still face contestation when its rezoning application goes before Huron County Council. The company originally discussed the rezoning at a Morris-Turnberry Council meeting on Nov. 7. The change would allow Canada Crane to expand its business and move it to better get along with neighbours. The rezoning would allow the company to move buildings away from residential property while expanding its industrial business and use a separate entrance for crane and truck traffic. Unfortunately, the change wasn't appreciated by owners of neighbouring residential properties, many of which sprung up around the industrial property after it was established according to Morris- Turnberry Council members. Morris-Turnberry Council was originally faced with a unique situation in which a landowner had objected to the rezoning. The landowner's comments and name, however, were kept out of the public record at Huron County Planner Jennifer Burns' suggestion to allow the Bakers, owners of Canada Crane Company, to privately attempt to resolve the issue. Councillors felt the request was odd, especially since the zoning application was dealt with in a special public meeting held apart from a council meeting. Several councillors commented that they were uncomfortable and unhappy with the request, especially when it came to light that the complaining landowner was outside of the radius of those who typically receive notice regarding zone changes to properties. Burns' plan was enacted and Canada Crane Company was able to deal with the problem with the landowner and his objections were withdrawn. Unfortunately for the Bakers, during the Nov. 7 meeting, another landowner expressed concerns with the project. Most of the problems brought forward were not part of the scope of the rezoning or the process that follows, according to Burns, including a request that the company no longer operate a repair business for other crane operators. "The planning designation permits that activity," she said during council's Nov. 21 meeting. "It's the applicants' business if they wish to repair equipment other than their own" The other complaints included a request to have the company build a Continued on page 23 Local families gather PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE Braving the cold The trio of ambassadors for the Brussels Agricultural Society and Fall Fair were out in full force, despite the cold, on Saturday night as part of the Brussels Fall Fair. The girls encouraged everyone to come out to the fair next year and take in all of its activities, including the dog show.
