Signs of Christmas abound in the Walton area Pole position The Brussels Legion Pipe Band started the annual Brussels Santa Claus Parade on Saturday night, as is tradition. The parade lasted approximately 20 minutes and featured family, business and community group floats spreading Christmas cheer. (Dennyscottphoto) PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Christmas is right around the corner and decorations are springing up all over. The Santa Claus parade was a great night in Brussels with lots of floats and people out watching. Real Christmas trees are arriving at the retail stores and it is nice to see the bright lights lighting up the country side. The weather let up a bit last week for a day or so and the combines hit the fields again, hoping to get more fields of corn in the bin. The nice weather of the weekend made a big dent in the number of fields left to go. There are still some fields of corn out there and as the farmers are busy drawing the corn to Walton, the pile gets higher and higher at Parrish & Heimbecker. Lots of farmers are also busy spreading manure and plowing, and a couple of farmers took advantage of the "drier" weather and some soybeans were even combined. I see snow fence going up around the community anticipating that the snow will arrive, but we are enjoying the nice temperatures today (Monday, as I write). The Brussels ladies birthday group met at JR's for the November/December birthday party. Celebrating special birthdays were Audrey Cardiff and Betty Campbell, each turning 85! It was also Nelva Scott's birthday to celebrate. Attending the dinner were Nora Stephenson, Marci Bremner, Isabel Wheeler, Merle Cousins, Marie, Lois and Betty McCutcheon, Laura Barbour, Bev Palmer, Betty Cardiff, Jane Hall, Jean Davidson, Joan Bernard and Dale Chesher. Happy birthday ladies. A very busy lady celebrating a special birthday last week was Edythe Warwick! It took a whole week to celebrate the occasion of her 90th birthday. It started with her two sons, Tom and Brian, taking her to her favourite restaurant, the Swiss Chalet in Stratford, for a birthday supper on the Sunday before her birthday. On her birthday, Nov. 22, Sharon and the boys were on hand to welcome many guests to their home and to serve birthday cake for their mother. Wilma Higgins stopped by as did Leona Johnston. Four ladies of the Bluevale quilting group stopped by as did Bruce and Anna Santa Claus and smiles The annual Brussels Santa Claus Parade was held on Saturday and, as usual, the Huron East Fire Department's Brussels hall played an important part. Above, firefighter Tyler Deitner waves as he marches in the parade. (Denny Scott photo) Hamilton with another cake. Later, Murray and Sandra Pepper arrived with an ice cream cake. Edythe rested a couple of days, then some nieces and family arrived on Sunday for more celebrations. Edythe has been busy and happy birthday to her! Be prepared for next week when the second deer hunt begins. I have not seen many deer around this past week but once the hunters hit the bushes, I am sure they will be on the move, so beware! A familiar face around town for a few days last week was Joanne Knight Black. She was here for a visit with dad Jack and to attend the Knight Christmas held on Saturday. She was the only member of her family to come to Ontario this year because she told me husband Weldon had commitments in Saint John, New Brunswick, Andrew is working in Fort McMurray, Alberta and Allison is in school at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba! The family is stretched across Canada. The countryside is changing again with the erection of new buildings and such. The shed on the Blake farm is coming along nicely with the siding being completed this week. The addition on the Boekee house on North Line is getting the roof finished and the cement break wall on the Godkin property is up. A new silo is on the Wilma Farms property and a steel grainery and a small shed on the Baan property is almost done. Work continues on the barn renovations on the Hoonaard farm on Walton Road and the expansion of the Bachert Meats building on Blyth Road continues. The Houston house is progressing well and looks really nice and a new house on Newry Road is coming along. The Doumas are all moved into their house on Morris Road. Great. Lots of changes! The two McDonald brothers, Neil and Rick, have made their annual weekend trip to he Grey Cup again. The pair travelled to Ottawa to go to the game. The weather was cold and snowy, the game close and the trip good. The only drawback was that neither the Hamilton Tigercats or the B.0 Lions were playing. Next year maybe? Jim and Leona Armstrong attended the retired teachers of Mitchell District High School Christmas party in Mitchell last week. There were 48 attending including the retired teachers and secretaries and spouses. Jim retired about 20 years ago and is one of the "oldest" still attending. Jim was one of my teachers when I went to Mitchell High School and Jim always jokes I was one of his best students! He is being kind because science was not my strong suit! Celebrating birthdays this past week included Donna McClure, Linda Gingerich, Linda McDonald, Mitchell McKee, Melody Hodgkins, Craig Gillis, Jo -Ann McDonald, Brad McKague, Brent McKague, Nicholas Zwep, Lin Steffler and Kaitlin Williamson.
