Smiles and treats for all
The Brussels Santa Claus parade was held on Saturday
and the village cheered as local families, community
groups, bands and businesses filled the streets with
Christmas tunes, lights and scenes. Above, Jeff McGavin of
McGavin Farm Equipment, dressed for the season, handed
out some candy during the parade. (Denny Scott photo)

Get ready December, here we
come. This is the month of music,
anticipation and fun. For the church
folk we talk about Advent, the time
of waiting and anticipation. As the
days of December move along, the
expectation level rises. So as we
move through these December days,
see it as a time of peace, hope, joy
and love for you and those in your
company and everyone will have a
lovely time.
December means lots of
gathering, so that means you need to
keep at your healthiest. Get your rest
and sleep, eat the healthy food and
wash your hands. When you do let a
"bug" catch you, please don't share.
Enjoy the break at home, not at the
gatherings.
The season has officially arrived
after Santa makes his way down
Turnberry Street. So he and the Mrs.
did their visit on Saturday evening.
Lots of vehicles attended the parade
with lights glowing and music
playing to make the mood on the
street such fun. This is community at
its best, people attending the parade
every year, come snow, rain or sleet
either as part of the parade or as the
appreciative audience. Both roles are
equally important for each needs the
other. Oh yes, that's community.
So to all the Santas and drivers and
snowmen and reindeer, thank you
for all the effort that went into your
decorated vehicle. From two of the
appreciative folks along the parade
route, thanks for the treats, candy
canes and chocolate.
Possibilities for this weekend start
with the nativity display supported
by the Brussels Ministerial at
Melville Presbyterian Church on
Friday evening and again on
Saturday until 2 p.m. So many types,
from so many places are fun to see.
Then on to Huronlea where you can
go shopping and visiting.
This is an annual event co-
ordinated by the Auxiliary. Several
crafters regularly attend, so unique
gifts can be purchased for your
people.
Both these spots are offering
refreshment/lunch, so you can
support both and not have to go
home for lunch. Everybody wins.
We're at the stage of Advent of
picking dates to gather as family, the
larger the family with a wide variety
of jobs makes this a challenge, but
well worth the effort when the
majority come.
This getting together is an
important part of the season as life
itself is celebrated, and the gift of
each other with all our unique quirks
is cause for great joy.
Be kind to yourself and others.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
`Early bird' branch dues price ends soon
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week began at the Brussels
Legion Branch with a funeral
luncheon for the late Joan Coleman.
Our sympathies are extended to the
Coleman families. Comrades Deb
Cann, Jo -Ann McDonald, Judy Lee

afternoon for the Branch.
The Thursday night darts had 11

increases on Dec. 1. Drop in today
and be an early bird. You will also
get a chance to win your dues for the
next year.
The Knight family Christmas was
held at the Branch on Saturday. The
family had a float in the Santa Claus
parade and then arrived to enjoy a
full Christmas dinner of turkey and
all the trimmings. About 40 people
enjoyed the evening including a visit
from Santa! Kitchen staff included
Judy Lee, Mary Bradshaw, Glenn
Bridge and Jo -Ann McDonald.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had nine tables of players. Winners
were: first, Hazel McGonigle and
Janet Davies, 80; second, Bush
Whittard and Pauline Bennett, 78;
third, Edna McLellan and Judy
Hahn, 73; low, George and Deanna
Bacon, 44 and most lone hands, Ann
Laidlaw and Joyce Hodgkins, six.
The special treat of the day was
homemade banana and lemon loaf
provided by the Branch bartender
BJ. It was enjoyed by all.
The Branch was a very busy place
on Sunday with the celebration of
life for Comrade Ken Bird. There
was over 200 people who dropped in
for the come -and -go celebration, for
a social time and to remember the
life of a great guy. Linda and Krista
and family were kept busy speaking
with all the friends, former co-
workers, trailer park friends,
Comrades, ball, broomball and
darter friends and neighbours during
the afternoon. Our condolences to
Linda and Krista and family.
Comrades helping with the
celebration included Jo -Ann
McDonald, Judy Lee, Deb Cann,
Deb Ross, Sandra Josling Brown,
Catrina Josling, John Lowe, Nicole
Noble and Mary Bradshaw.
The Sunday night dance had a
small turnout for the Crippled Duck
band. There was plenty of room for
dancing. The group enjoyed a great
lunch because of the afternoon party
with fruit and squares left for them.
Don't forget it is wing night with
Adam Cousins providing the musical
entertainment this Saturday night.
