He said that, through both his Seaforth business and other venues, he is well connected to the trucking world and knows that things are getting difficult for them. "With the Ministry of Transportation cutting back the hours that drivers are allowed to be on the road, being able to stop and have a nap and take a break is important," he said. "That's true for the long-haul agriculture drivers and the Transport truck drivers will have a new spot to stop, get some shuteye, fuel up, clean up and grab a coffee in Huron East starting in December. Dave Smith, owner of several companies including Smith Packaging in Seaforth, said he saw a need to open a spot for long-haul truckers to stop. The need arose from truckers facing increasing difficulty to find a place to park and rest. Smith turned to a property he owns, Old 86 Market, and, over the past year, he has worked towards meeting the needs of truck drivers. salt trucks that are around here." Smith said the truck traffic on County Road 86 is significant and he thinks it's a good spot to offer a chance for drivers to rest, refuel and relax. "There's definitely a need for it," he said. "We want to serve the trucking industry." The first phase of the project has been to set up the fueling location, the installation of gas and diesel tanks, the construction of bathrooms and showers and creating 70 truck parking spots at the Obituaries Carleton Place, Ontario. Smith said the station will remain under the Old 86 brand, though it will be mostly self -serve and under different management. The second phase of the project, which may take some time according to Smith, is to have a restaurant at the site. Smith said the project has benefited significantly from its host municipality of Huron East, which has been welcoming of the new business, and Edward Fuels in Goderich which will be working with Smith to keep the independent site operational. A grand opening is set for Dec. 2 at the site. "We're going to have donuts, coffee and hot dogs," he said of the event, which starts at 9 a.m. "We want people to come and see it and know where we are." The day will also serve as a chance for customers to sign up for fuel cards as the fuel system will be a card -lock model open 24 hours a day. The site will provide fuel for truckers as well as commercial or passenger vehicles — something Smith says the community needs. He said the station will also be a benefit to the agricultural sector as farmers can fuel up there instead of keeping their own stock. "We will have gasoline and diesel fuel available," he said. "People from areas like Wroxeter, Molesworth and Gorrie and the surrounding communities will have some place they can stop without entering congested traffic areas." The grand opening is weather - dependant, Smith said, and something to which he is very much looking forward. "I'm very excited to see people out there and to see people using it," he said. "That's why I'm doing this — to fill the need that's there" For more information, contact Smith at 519-440-8124.
