A Remembrance Day service was
held at Dungannon Trinity Pastoral
Charge and Belgrave Knox United
Church on Sunday, Nov. 5.
Brian Hymers lit the Christ candle.
Lord, You were with us during times
of war and you were with us in times
of peace. The candle was lit in
memory of Your unfailing love for
humanity and may it remind us of
our humanness and our sinful ways
in which we have treated our fellow
children of God.
The gathering prayer was, "An
Affirmation of Peace". The call to
worship was read responsively.
The congregation entered into a
"Time of Remembrance" as they
sang the welcoming hymn, "0
Canada". A moment of silence was
observed. Brian and Jackie Hymers
sang, "Let There Be Peace on
Earth". Each person went forward
and placed their poppy upon the
cross or beside it. They took a
toothpick and tasted the maple syrup
provided. "In Flanders Fields" was
recited.
After the choir anthem, the
children's hymn, "Let There
Be Light" was sung and the
children gathered in the front
pew for time with Brian. His
message was entitled "The Watch".
Everyone listened to the word of
God as the scripture lesson was read
from Mark 4: 36-41 and Psalm 107:
23-32.
The offering was taken up and
dedicated. The offertory response
was the singing of the hymn, "For
the Gift of Creation". The Lord's
Prayer was spoken in unison and the
closing hymn, `Abide With Me",
benediction and blessing and the
singing of "May the God of Hope
Go With Us", concluded the
morning worship service.
Cable fills in at Knox United Church service
Roger and Debbie Hopper and
family greeted and handed out the
bulletins at Knox United Church on
Sunday, Nov. 12.
Sandra Cable, a retired minister,
was the pulpit supply. Sandra lit the
Christ candle.
As we prepare to begin this
service we have no need of oil for
our lamp. With the strike of a match
or the flick of a lighter there will be
light for our candle — candlelight to
remind us that Jesus is with us
always.
The call to worship was read
responsively, followed by the
singing of "Come, Let Us Sing".
The hymns were accompanied by
Ann Clark at the organ and Lila
Procter with her guitar.
Lila Procter reported on the
announcements. The Board of
Stewards are having a breakfast in
the church basement on Nov. 26 at
9:30 a.m.
On Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7:30
p.m. there isa meeting regarding
"Future of Our Church" and on Nov.
29 an official board meeting at 7:30
p.m.
The opening prayer was read
responsively followed by the choir
singing a hymn.
The children's hymn was "Jesus,
Friend of Little Children" verses one
and two and then the children went
to the front pew for story time.
Sandra told them of the 10
bridesmaids who were supposed to
be helping the groom at a wedding.
Five of them were foolish and didn't
bring enough oil for their lamps. The
five wise bridesmaids assisted the
groom. The five who didn't have oil
went to get some, but when they
came back the door was locked so
they missed the wedding
celebration.
Jesus tells us to be ready and be
prepared. The bridesmaids were to
be ready to assist the groom.
The children were given candy,
which they shared. After prayer the
children adjourned to Sunday
school. The congregation sang the
third verse of "Friend of Little
Children".
Sandra's sermon was entitled,
"Keep the Lamps Burning". We
have to be prepared to be ready and
make plans to make it happen. She
told of how she had to prepare to do
baking for the Brussels Fall Fair. All
her preparations paid off. There is
major planning and preparing for a
wedding.
Jesus liked to tell parables about
weddings. Each wedding story had a
heavenly meaning. She referred to
Matthew 25: 1-13. Only five of the
10 bridesmaids participated in
helping the groom in the torchlight
parade escorting the groom into the
building. Jesus said we should be
prepared for something that is going
to happen. We have accepted God as
our Saviour. We need to live the life
that God wants us to live.
The singing of "Come To My
Heart Lord Jesus" was followed by
Nancy Jardin reporting on the
Minute for Mission which focused
on the Social Innovation challenge.
Larry Harper and Doug Walker took
up the offering which was
dedicated after the Lord's Prayer
was spoken.
The closing hymn, "All the Way
My Saviour Leads Me" was sung
and the commissioning and
benediction concluded the morning
worship service.
