(Shawn Loughlin photo) Trail committee completes work in Wingham: Beard By Denny Scott The Citizen The Wingham Community Trail Committee has completed a significant amount of work on the trail this year according to committee member Phil Beard. Beard represented the committee during North Huron Council's Nov. 6 meeting. He explained to council that, over the past year, more than 180 hours of work have been put into the trail. The committee created a 100 - metre buffer strip between the trail and adjacent businesses that includes 116 trees and shrubs planted with the assistance of TD Tree Days, a volunteer program that provides trees for community projects. Beard said the group also rebuilt a cedar rail fence on the east side of the trail. He thanked Jim McGee of the Belgrave area for providing the rails to the group at a reduced rate. "Members of the board did the work in rebuilding the fence," he said. "We plan on rebuilding the fence on the west side of the trail next year and planting some flowering vines and wild roses" The group refurbished the trail's entrance garden at Patrick Street Beard said wood chips were spread and wild flowers were planted in the space. The International Plowing Match's (IPM) Education Committee provided the wild flowers for the project. "The flowers were provided at no cost," Beard said. "The [IPM] committee didn't want to see them go to waste" The Education Committee also donated wild flowers that were planted by the trail committee near Maitland River Elementary Schood. Beard explained that, similar to previous years' presentations, the trail committee was at the meeting to advise council on the group's activities and not to ask for funding. He explained that he felt it fell to every citizen to chip in and make their community great. Councillor Ray Hallahan congratulated the group and its volunteers for the efforts forward. put #1 And We K J ► StiII Try Harder! Bottle drive set for Nov. 25 By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen On Saturday, Nov. 25, representatives of Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey will be on the hunt for your bottles in an effort to raise funds for the league. Sarah Cherrey, a representative of the parents of the league from Blyth, is one of the organizers of the event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. The hope, she said, is that both the Blyth and Brussels communities will take part. The main locations for the bottle drive will be Scrimgeour's Food Market in Blyth and the Jam Jar Pub and Eatery in Brussels. However, Cherrey hopes that most businesses in both Blyth and Brussels will participate that day. Cherrey said she hopes that most local businesses will open themselves up as fundraisers, asking patrons to donate $1 each to help the hockey association's fundraising efforts. The drive will go towards tournament fees and the hope is that enough will be raised that day to donate some of the proceeds to each of the association's teams. For more information on the bottle drive, or to participate, call Cherrey on her cell phone at 519-572- 9257.
