North Huron receives five years of OPP call data By Denny Scott The Citizen The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) presented a significant amount of information to North Huron Council Monday night, but it wasn't what council was looking for. At the meeting, OPP Staffing Inspector Terry Hamilton, interim Huron Detachment Commander while Inspector Jason Younan is on a one-month training leave, gave a snapshot of police calls for East Wawanosh and Blyth wards over the last five years. The synopsis of that information is that North Huron is on track for an average year for calls when compared to the past five years. When compared to the entire county, Blyth and East Wawanosh represents between three and four per cent of total calls and, with the exception of property crime, has seen higher clearance levels than the rest of the county in almost every category over the last five years. Unfortunately, that wasn't the information that council had requested when it was suggested the OPP be brought in to address aspects of policing in North Huron. In previous discussions, council had directed staff to have the OPP explain any efficiencies that could be found by having Wingham policed by the OPP, which would mean the entire county would be under the same police service. Councillor Trevor Seip, in those previous discussions, had said he wanted the OPP to explain what it would cost to cover Wingham after Showing off OCD Custom Designs Inc., a company that focuses on transport truck customization and custom part design, has opened in Brussels at the former McCutcheon Motors building at the south end of the downtown core. The company hosted an open house on Saturday, kicking off a week-long celebration to mark the opening. The open house included two trucks the company had already worked on, shown above. (Quinn Talbot photo) it ADCENTR the three-year transitional period, information which was also absent from the presentation. The only information presented was the number of calls that the OPP have covered in North Huron in the past five years. During the meeting, Deputy - Reeve James Campbell relayed several questions from ratepayers. Campbell said both Blyth and East Wawanosh have had increased crime rates in the past several months and asked why the OPP wasn't advising the public of ongoing threats to the community. Hamilton said that the OPP provide media releases on occurrences that are happening, but said he couldn't address the issue without specific situation information. "A week or so ago one of the township residents woke up in the night and saw flashlights shining into his windows, up his stairways and in the hall," Campbell said. "What does this person do? What does he do to protect himself?" Hamilton said his first suggestion would be to call 911. He then talked about the OPP's 'Lock It or Lose It' campaign which is focused on preventing theft. Acting Staff Sergeant Wendy Burrow directed the conversation to vehicles, saying that newer vehicles are harder to steal without keys, then suggesting that, if met with a difficult -to -steal vehicle, thieves then move on. Campbell said he fears that farmers are going to take matters into their own hands which Hamilton said he wouldn't suggest. Campbell asked how the crime rate has changed in the past six months and Burrow said that isn't a time period that can be explained, saying a longer time frame needs to be examined. "The numbers for 2017 are in line with [previous years]," she said. "We've looked at analytics and it's going to be right along the average. I don't necessarily agree that the crime rate has increased as our reports are staying the same." Burrow said if there is an increase, it could be that the incidents aren't being reported. Hamilton said that can be a problem for the OPP as many people don't want to "bother" the policing service. He said people should follow the mantra of "If you don't like what you see, call the OPP". "If you see suspicious people or vehicles... call us," he said. "Right away that increases our ability to investigate... It isn't bothering us, we look forward to what you have to say" A group effort The Brussels Cadet Corp took to the streets of the village on Saturday, Oct. 28, knocking on doors and handing out poppies in return for donations.
