Hockey Day in Brussels
The ice surface at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre was a busy place to be on Saturday as
the community hosted its annual Hockey Day. Blyth
Brussels minor hockey teams took on challengers from
all over the county and beyond throughout the day all
leading up to a match -up between the Huron Centenaires
and the Milverton 4Wheel Drives. Here, the Novice Local
League team took on the Ripley Wolves on Saturday
morning, but came up just short in the high -scoring affair by
a score of 7-6. (Quinn Talbot photo)
Local pastors to host
screening in Clinton
A group of local pastors has
worked to organize a screening of
Over 18, a documentary about the
effects of pornography on the
current generation.
Ernest Dow of Living Water
Christian Fellowship in Blyth is one
of the pastors involved in the
initiative, which will see the film
screened at Central Huron
Secondary School on Tuesday, Nov.
28.
The documentary was first
screened in Huron County on Oct.
19 in Exeter. It was followed by a
panel discussion and attracted over
100 viewers.
With the internet and smartphones
changing the accessibility of media
of all kinds, including pornography,
Dow, in an interview with The
Citizen, says it's a new world now
where people of all ages have easy,
constant accessibility to
pornography.
When Dow was a child, he said,
pornography was on the top shelf at
corner stores in brown paper bags.
Even then, it consisted of pictures of
naked women. Now, he said, it's
constantly available and it's evolved
to often depicting violent and
borderline criminal activity. It's this
shift in thinking, he says, that is
molding young people's brains and
their approach to sex.
The screening of the film and the
corresponding panel discussion has
been endorsed by the Avon Maitland
District School Board, as well as the
Huron County Health Unit, which
will be sending a representative to
participate in the panel discussion,
which will likely also include
several local pastors.
Dow says the initiative began with
Ryan Jantzi of Zurich Mennonite
Church and it has since spread due
to interest in further screenings
around the county.
In material that accompanies the
movie, Dow said, it states that 90 per
cent of boys and 60 per cent of girls
have seen pornography by the age of
18. Furthermore, 94 per cent of
those mentioned had been exposed
to it by the age of 14.
He also said that 40 per cent of
teens have created a "sexual image"
of themselves and 25 per cent of
those have sent it to someone else.
The reason for the documentary
screening and corresponding panel
discussion, Dow said, is to create a
consciousness and awareness for
parents and grandparents about
what's going on with their children
and grandchildren and to start a
discussion about something that's
being accessed by people at
increasingly younger ages.
The screening will be open to
everyone and free to attend,
although a free-will offering to help
cover costs associated with the
screening will be accepted.
