Letter to the Editor
IPM executive thanks `Citizen'
THE EDITOR,
The International Plowing Match
(IPM) 2017 Executive held its
inaugural meeting at the Brussels
Legion on Oct. 29, 2013. From that
initial meeting our vision as a group
was to celebrate Huron County
while hosting an entertaining and
educational event for all ages. Since
it was the 100th match we wanted to
expand on the traditions of the IPM
and our local heritage, and look to
the future of rural living, while
connecting the communities and
citizens within the county. We also
wanted to showcase Huron's strong
agricultural, cultural and tourism
sectors and provide the out -of -
county visitors to the match with an
experience that would encourage
them to come back to visit us, or
move here to make Huron their
home.
Huron County is blessed with
prime agricultural land, beautiful
beaches and incredible sunsets. But
as a group the executive also
believes that our greatest resource
are the wonderful and talented
people who live and work in the
County. That belief was
strengthened the moment we began
to organize for the match, as
volunteers came forward to share
their time and talent to lead
committees, create logos, sing,
dance, sell souvenirs and fundraise.
By the end, there were over 2,000
people helping to do everything
from make lunches, to drive tractors
to park cars to clean up garbage.
Absolutely Huron County is
fortunate to have such wonderful
residents who can rise to the
occasion, no matter what the
weather, to lend a hand.
As we work through paying bills
and completing the financial
statements, we look forward to
sharing the financial success with
organizations and charities within
Huron County. That process began
Friday, Oct. 20 at the Volunteer
Appreciation evening at the
Regional Equine and Agricultural
Centre of Huron (REACH) in
Clinton. The executive was pleased
to return the $100,000 loan to the
County of Huron, and make a
presentation to Central Huron
Hospice and Jessica's House. The
offering from the IPM church
service was ear -marked for hospice
care in the county and the church
service committee was thrilled that
close to $6,000 was split between
Jessica's House and Central Huron
Hospice.
A large portion of any event is
promotion and the IPM is no
different. It was imperative for us to
spread the news of the upcoming
IPM and to promote all the lead -up
events such as the beautification
competition, the quilt show, the barn
quilt initiative, the cookbook and the
tractor convoy. We would like to say
thank you to The Citizen and in
particular Denny Scott and Shawn
Loughlin, for their coverage of the
IPM for the past four years. Not
only did the paper promote the
Match, but Denny and Shawn told
the individual and family stories
behind the scenes and focused in on
the people involved in the match.
They brought the event to life before
it happened and reinforced the fact
that the IPM is much more than a
tented city and RV park popping up
in the centre of an Ontario farm.
The IPM in Huron was a show of
Huron County pride and that pride
was captured in their articles and
photos. I have always said that the
IPM is a chance to renew old
acquaintances and make new
friends; and all members of the
executive certainly consider Denny
and Shawn both friends and
wonderful ambassadors for IPM
2017. We wish them all the best in
the future.

Toronto or to the United States to
shop according to Mulligan.
She said her store would have a
'cool atmosphere' and she would be
very selective of the brand and
condition of clothing coming in.
According to her research,
Mulligan said she had a potential
audience of 7,460 students in the
local public school board alone,
saying she planned for online sales
to help.
Finally, Mulligan said that, with
local economic booms in Brussels
and Blyth, she wanted to be
involved.
DeWit's company would focus on
her natural brand No Nonsense
Natural Products which features 80
different products in 10 different
categories from cleaning to health
products.
She explained that she had also
started a furniture refinishing
business as a way to fund the natural
product line to make sure her family
wasn't taking out a loan for the
business.
DeWit plans on opening this
weekend at 422 Turnberry Street in
Brussels and will showcase her own
products as well as a space that can
be rented by people looking to host
creative endeavours or business
events.
Prior to DeWit being announced
as the winner, MP Ben Lobb, MPP
Lisa Thompson, Huron County
Warden Jim Ginn and Huron East
Mayor and evening emcee Bernie
MacLellan congratulated the
contestants.
Former winners and contestants
were also welcomed to the stage to
speak while the judges finished their
deliberations, many of whom lauded
Hawley for her efforts in making the
event a success.
DeWit was announced as the
winner by Hawley and her
collaborator for the event Alison
Lobb. Both said they thought all
three contestants did a great job,
giving the judges a difficult decision
to make.
The event, which was originally
scheduled to be held in Seaforth, was
moved after councillors reported
receiving negative feedback about a
Brussels -focused event being held in
Seaforth.
