Armstrong named Brussels Citizen of the Year
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
After receiving nearly 10
nominations, Elaine Armstrong has
been voted this year's Citizen of the
Year for the Brussels community.
Community members have
praised Armstrong for her hard work
in a number of different capacities in
Brussels. She was instrumental in
the creation of the Soup & More 2
program, which extends its reach
into the community for those
looking for a hot lunch and some
fellowship. Not only was she crucial
to the program's creation, but she
continues to be involved in it to this
day.
One nomination commended her
involvement with the Melville
Presbyterian Church, saying that not
only is she an elder in the church, but
that she also serves as a choir
member, Sunday School
superintendent and she serves on
many of the church's committees.
Armstrong is also very involved in
the planning of many community
bridal showers and her reach extends
beyond her home community and
home church. She has supported the
Kids' Korner Vacation Bible School
at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
since the 1980s when it began, as
well as events throughout Huron
East and into Ethel.
"If a job needs done, Elaine
willingly helps with a ready smile,"
read one nomination. "Elaine is a
great community volunteer who
deserves the award of Citizen of the
Year."
Armstrong has also served for a
number of years as a member of the
Melville Women's Guild and
Women's Missionary Society.
"[Armstrong] does all this while
helping to look after her mother, her
mother-in-law and her
grandchildren," another nomination
read. "She likely does many more
things, but she is so humble that we
don't know about it."
Armstrong will be part of a plaque
presentation later this year.
This year's Citizen of the Year was
chosen based on nominations
received in this past year and in
recent years and then a panel
consisting of the past five Citizen of
the Year winners chose based on
those nominations.
The award is presented annually
by North Huron Publishing, parent
company of The Citizen.
