Blyth United Church is having a
Shared ministry marks fifth anniversary
Blyth United Church and Brussels
United Church joined together for a
church service on Sunday, Oct. 29 at
Brussels United Church to celebrate
five years of shared ministry. While
gathering for worship, the members
of the two congregations enjoyed
the music of a joint band.
Hillary MacDonald welcomed
everyone to church and to celebrate
five years of shared ministry. She
drew everyone's attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin
Hillary invited the children to
come to the front and help her light
the Christ candle. She invited
everyone to greet one another. The
opening hymn was "Let Us Build a
House" followed by the call to
worship repeated responsively. The
joint choirs sang the anthem "The
Family of Faith"(words and music
by Joseph Martin). Brenda Brooks
read the scripture from Hebrews 11.
Hillary asked the children to come
to the front for their story time. She
asked the children if they knew that
the church was celebrating five
years of shared ministry. She told
them it was like a birthday party.
She explained to them that years
ago, men built the two churches but
as time passed we found that we had
to share our minister and by
working together we are able to
celebrate five years of being
together. She asked the children if
they remembered the five -hand
prayer that she had taught them a
few weeks ago. One of the boys
remembered that the thumb
represented our heart, the pointed
finger was for teachers, the third
finger, the tallest was for leaders, the
fourth finger the weakest finger was
for those people who are sick and
the baby finger was for ourselves.
We are thankful for all these
prayers.
The children went downstairs for
their time of fellowship. The hymn
"For the Fruits of All Creation" was
sung. Hillary lit five candles of past,
present and future.
The choirs sang another anthem
"God's Many Blessings". Hillary's
message to the congregation was
"Quilts." Hillary said she was not a
quilter but her grandmother was.
Her grandmother had made a quilt
for each of her children and
grandchildren. The quilt had that
person's name on it and also a patch
on the back that said made with love
by grandma.
Quilts are made of different
materials. Some quilts that were
made for the underground people
were made of old clothes but they
still kept those that had them warm.
God is a quilter. He made
something from nothing into a
beautiful world. God cuts the pattern
from everything we do. We are all
odd pieces of God's crazy quilt.
Some patches of God's quilt are old
and some new but every piece, when
put together, becomes a beautiful
work of art.
The past five years havebeen a
process with some struggles but
with faith in God our quilt will
continue to grow and always have
room for more. The next hymn
"Come Touch Our Hearts" was
sung. The offering was received
followed by the singing of the
offertory response "As Those of Old
Their First Fruits Brought", the
offertory prayers, the prayers for the
people with the congregation
singing the verses of "I was There to
Hear Your Borning Cry" between
prayers and the singing of the Lord's
Prayer. The last hymn, "The
Church's One Foundation" was
followed by the benediction, grace

FROM BLYTH
Catch the little foxes!
(J.C. Ryle)
"Catch the little foxes that ruin the vineyards; for our vines have tender
grapes." Song of Songs 2:15
Resolve at once, by God's help, to break off every known sin, however
small.
Look within, each one of you. Examine your own hearts. Do you see
there any habit which you know is wrong in the sight of God? If you do,
resolve at once to cast it off!
Nothing darkens the eyes of the mind so much, and deadens the
conscience so surely — as an allowed sin. It may be a little one — but it is
not any less dangerous.
A small leak will sink a great ship.
A small spark will kindle a great fire.
In the same way, a little allowed sin will ruin an immortal soul.
Brethren, resist sin in its beginnings. Some sins may look small and
insignificant, but mind what I say — resist them, make no compromise, let
no sin lodge quietly and undisturbed in your heart. Remember the
Apostle's words, "A little yeast works through the whole batch of
dough!" 1 Corinthians 5:6
Whatever the world may like to think — there are no little sins! All habits
are formed by a succession of little acts, and the first little act is of
mightly consequence.
The ax in the fable, only begged the trees to let him have one little piece
of wood to make a handle — and he would never trouble them any more.
He got it, and then he soon cut them all down!
The devil only wants to get the wedge of a little allowed sin into your
heart — and you will soon be all his own.
There are two ways of coming down from the top of a ladder.
One is to jump down — and the other is to come down by the steps.
Both will lead you to the bottom.
Just so, there are two ways of going to Hell.
One is to walk into it with your eyes open — few people do that.
The other is to go down the steps of little sins — and that way is only too
common. Put up with a few little sins — and you will soon tolerate a few
more. Even a heathen could say, "Who was ever content with only one
sin?" If you put up with little sins, then your path in life will be worse
and worse every year.
Jeremy Taylor very clearly described the progress of sin in a man:
First sin startles him,
then it becomes pleasing,
then it becomes easy,
then it becomes delightful,
then it becomes frequent,
then it becomes habitual,
then it becomes a way of life.
Then the man feels no guilt,
then he becomes obstinate,
and then he is damned!
Friends, if you don't want to come to this, remember the rule I give you
this day — resolve at once to break off every known sin!
