Holy, we're into the home stretch
of finishing another year. With the
arrival of November, things just
naturally settle into the getting -
things -done mode. Plans first laid in
the new part of the year are
examined, adjusted or finished as
seen fit. The arrival of each season
At the Branch
and month gives us the heads -up that
things are moving along and we
need to keep at it. Work completed is
reviewed and plans to get to the
other things are pondered. So here's
to November, 2017.
The celebration of Halloween is
one of those times that varies with
age and stage. To admire the
imagination that gets costumes
ready with much thought and effort
is fun to watch. The anticipation of
the parties and fun that come with it
cause many to smile. The effort of
sharing with neighbours and friends
the decorations, pumpkins and lights
is a nice touch to any community. I
hope you had a fun Halloween,
whatever your age and stage.
The United Church of Blyth and
Brussels on Sunday celebrated a
five-year anniversary of shared
ministry. Two small rural
congregations, a few years ago,
knew that the realities of age and
interest were going to impact their
congregations in a very few years.
Chats were had, needs discussed and
plans made and adjusted over time.
Sandra Cable, Gary Clark and
Hillary MacDonald have all shared
their wisdom and leadership as we
lived our adventure.
When things change, there are two
choices: let it happen or embrace and
enhance the change. While faith in
God is a personal thing and can be
done alone, to be a good example of
a living faith we need to be part of
the outside world. So Sunday we
celebrated. Voices and band numbers
with members from both
communities were thoroughly
enjoyed. Wisdom from quilting
indicated that ideas, items and
people with plans, enthusiasm and
love can be pulled together to make
God smile. Shared food was also
part of the plan to make our first five
years a celebration.
The Majestic Women's Institute is
part of making our community a
better place. Historically, Institutes
have lobbied for many changes that
give us a safer, better world.
Pasteurized milk, safe food, nutrition
awareness and farm safety come
quickly to mind. Once again they are
helping to keep us safe — education
on scams will be part of their

It has been a busy, busy week at
the Brussels Legion Branch. The
week started with the Brussels Lions
Club holding its bi-monthly
meeting. The group of about 23
enjoyed a roast beef dinner.
Tuesday evening ,the Branch had
its annual visitation by the Zone
Commander Keith VanderHoek and
Deputy -Commander Dennis
Schmidt. They inspected all the
financial books of the Branch and
then sat in on the regular meeting.
They commented on how pleased
they are with the finances and how
well the Branch has worked to pay
off the bank loan for the addition.
There is still some work to be done,
but hopefully by spring it will be all
paid off. We thank all for their
support, including the Brussels Trust
for another donation towards the
cost of the addition.
Fundraising will continue with a
fish fry planned for this Saturday,
Nov. 4, before the fryers are put
away for the winter.
The group voted to sponsor the
$350 entry fee for the Blyth Brussels
PeeWee Rep team to attend the
Zone Legion PeeWee tournament in
Lucknow in November and to
donate $350 towards the Local
PeeWee team to attend Young
Canada Week in March in Goderich.
Membership is coming along with
the early -bird winner for September
being Deb Ross. The October
winner will be announced next
week. Drop in today and pay your
dues and hopefully win!
Plans for Remembrance Day were
discussed. We will be going to St.
Ambrose Catholic Church this year
and then lunch at the Branch to
follow. The Huronlea service will be
at 2 p.m.
George Adams requested
permission from the Branch to sell
his new barbecue scrapers around
the Branch at events. All the money
raised goes to prostate cancer
research and, to date, George has
raised $7,300 through sales of his
various woodcrafts. George was
honoured at a special presentation in
Toronto recently for his amazing
efforts in raising funds for research.
Permission was granted and all
members of the executive purchased
several scrapers for the cause.
Wednesday evening is Functional
Fitness at the Branch with Jess
Jorritsma. Class is from 7-8 p.m. and
there is room for more. Call Jess at
519-531-0398 to inquire about the
class.
Thursday evening is Pipe Band
practice and it was prep night for the
upcoming event on Friday evening.
We prepared lots of veggies and fruit
and found all the fancy plates and
dishes at the Branch.
The Thursday night blind darts
began last week and there were a
nice few out for the first night.
Winners were: first, Deb Burch and
Sandra Josling Brown; second,
Marlene Rutledge and Penny
Reynolds and high shot, Gord
Jacklin, 110. All are welcome to
come and play when they can.
Friday was busy with five ladies
working for five hours preparing the
delicious hors d'oeuvres provided
for the Win This Space event at the
Legion. Over 90 people attended the
evening and witnessed Jackie DeWit
become the newest Brussels
business owner. She is opening her
business in the former ice cream
shop. Congratulations to her. There
were four Comrades on hand to cook
and serve the food during the
evening. Helping support the Legion
were Sandra Josling Brown, Nancy
Hakkers, Sherry Rowe, Judy Lee ,
Catrina Josling, Jo -Ann McDonald,
Nanci Ducharme and Justin
Morrison Thanks to all!
No rest for the wicked, they say,
and many of the same names were
back to the Branch on Saturday
morning for the town canvass for the
Poppy campaign. There were 18
Cadets aiding in the canvass and six
Comrades driving to the outlying
villages or canvassing with Cadets.
They canvassed from 9:15 a.m. and
were finished about 11:30 a.m. They
enjoyed hot chocolate, cookies, fruit
and veggies for a snack before
leaving. The Cadet Corp will receive
a cheque for their help.
The Branch was saddened to hear
of the news of the passing of
Comrade Glenn Bridge's wife Jean
Bridge. She was a lovely lady who
liked fun. She helped around the
Branch for many years and enjoyed
a good laugh. Our sympathies are
extended to Comrade Glenn and
family.
Prior to the start of the Saturday
euchre, a special presentation was
made to Comrade Deb Ross. She
was presented with a certificate of
appreciation by President Jamie
Mitchell from Ontario Command
for her years of service with seniors
and the veterans visiting program
across the province. Comrade Deb
was very surprised and the
presentation was witnessed by
Comrades Sandra Josling Brown,
Judy Lee and Jo -Ann McDonald.
Congrats to Comrade Deb. She
received a round of applause from
the seniors gathered!
The Saturday afternoon euchre
was held with 12 tables of players
hoping to win. Comrades Frank
Workman and Deb Ross were in
