From the Minister's Study The truth will make you free: Versteeg By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel Oct. 31 is a special day this year on the church calendar. It is special every year, but this year even more so because of a special anniversary. Five hundred years ago (1517) Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. This was the beginning of what we often refer to in the church as the `Reformation.' Martin Luther had studied the Scriptures as a monk and he had become a lecturer and teacher in the monastery and in the church. For a number of years he had wrestled and struggled with the matter of his own sin and of being right with God. He understood from the Scriptures that God is completely holy and perfect in everything, and he also knew from the Scriptures and from his own experience that he was not. So Luther was deeply troubled. How could a sinner, like himself, be made right with God who was perfectly holy? Through this struggle and his study of Scripture, God led him to understand that Jesus was the answer to His struggle. Jesus had lived without sin and He had died to take the punishment that God's holiness and justice required for our sin. The fact that Jesus rose 1qt-a • Share your news by placing your announcement in The Citizen Call for pricing & details 519-523-4792 or 519-887-9114 iivilj Water Cf withait 1 ellacl up October 29: 1Cor.13:6ff "The Secrets 40Daysj of Lasting Love" of f LiE - 40 Days of Love #6 11:00 a.m. at H&B Shannon's 316 Hamilton Street, Blyth Mondays 7:30 pm • Blyth Small Group at H&D Snell's Tuesdays 7:30 pm • Wingham Small Group (info 523.4848) Wednesdays 10:00 am • Women's COFFEE BREAK Bible Study at Blyth CRC Wednesdays 6:30 pm • Heirborn (JK•Gr.6) & Youth Group at Huron Chapel, Auburn Pastor: Ernest Dow - 519-523-484 + getlivingwater.org again from the dead proved that the payment had been made in full. Luther also came to understand that all the benefits of Jesus' life, death and resurrection are offered to us by God as a gift and are received by faith. It is faith in Jesus that connects us with Jesus and brings all His benefits to us. The discovery of this truth in the Scriptures brought great relief and joy into Luther's heart. He knew and believed that it was not his doing that could make him right with God but it was Jesus' doing. Luther was now assured that his sins were forgiven and that everything between him and God was now reconciled on account of Jesus. This is the teaching in the Scripture that we refer to as "Justification by Faith in Jesus Christ". Galatian 2:16 says, "a man is not justified by the works of law but through faith in Christ Jesus." This was the teaching that sparked the reformation and is still central to the Christian church today. When Luther posted his theses it was not his aim to create a great stir in the church. He wanted to have discussion with the church leaders. He was concerned that the church had drifted into error on these points concerning justification. Luther wrote the theses in Latin, which was the academic language of the church leaders. He then nailed them to a church door, which was a common practice in those days when a person wanted to discuss something with the church leaders. He did not intend them for the general public. But God was at work in all of this. Someone got a hold of the theses, translated them into German and then began to publish copies on the newly -invented printing press. The people became quite interested and soon copies of Luther's theses were spreading all over Germany. The truth of justification as taught in the Scriptures began to reform the church. Many people began to understand and be set free by the biblical truth of being made right with God through faith in Jesus. The truth of "justification by faith in Jesus" was not a new teaching, it was just recovered from the Scriptures. Today, many people are still discovering this truth about justification and are putting their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. Jesus said, "you will know the truth and the truth will make you free" (Jn. 8:32). Let us as the church of Jesus Christ keep teaching this truth. Let us hear the words of Galatians 5:1: "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."
