The Citizen, 2017-10-26, Page 18PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2017. Meeting roofs, rain require careful planning, roofing Before and after To address barrier -free accessibility as well as the desire for a larger kitchen at St. George's Anglican Church, Blyth -based architect John Rutledge had to consider all options. With the church not wanting to lose any space from its hall (the left part of the structure shown above), he sought space to expand the building's footprint and found it between the two main structures shown above. The proposed renovation will see the space between the two structures closed off, as shown below, creating more space for an accessible washroom, ramp to the premises and will allow the kitchen to expand. "There is water draining from two different directions where the proposed renovation is," he said. Because the Parish Hall and the existing Sanctuary both drain into the same area, putting a roof between the two, no matter how it is sloped, would result in significant drainage requirements. In the end, Rutledge decided that a sloped roof, a wall and a lower roof would be needed to make sure water didn't pool against the stained glass of the Sanctuary and wouldn't leak into the new structure. "The water drainage is a significant concern and it's going to require precise planning and implementation," he said. "It will also require a contactor who will properly install roof flashing. "It's a very, very interesting addition," he said. "It's challenging, but, at the same time, it's going to be a new kind of project for me with the interior walls being the exposed exterior brickwork of the Sanctuary and Parish Hall." The buttresses of the existing Sanctuary Apse create three contained areas that will become features of the new space. One will have a sink as part of the barrier -free washroom, one will become a long, open closet space for coats and one will have a bench installed. The space will also feature a unique floor -to -ceiling window that will separate the new architecture from the exterior walls. Rutledge also said the addition will match the church exterior. As a result of the creation of the new space, the existing stairway in the Parish Hall will need to be moved from the southeast corner of the hall to the southwest corner of the hall which will block off the existing entrance, allowing it to - Bucket Truck Service Tree Trimming/Removal Dave Bernard Stump Grinding - Free Estimates sTUh1PY-s EE SERVICE xxc become part of the kitchen. "That will allow the kitchen to be enlarged internally," Rutledge said, "killing two birds with one stone" The renovation is really "thinking outside the box" according to Rutledge and, as stated above, one of the most challenging designs he has ever tackled. Rutledge said the renovation is indicative of his experience with older churches, saying they are either very intricate and challenging projects or very simple ones. "There is no middle ground," he said. "I wish there was, but it's either a very complicated solution or a very simple one" Rutledge knows as well, having renovated the Fugitive Slave Chapel in London, Lucknow Presbyterial Church, Melville Presbyterial Church in Brussels, the Brussels United Church, the first Baptist Church in Goderich and the Bayfield United Church. Rutledge also worked on the Brussels Library barrier -free renovation several years ago.
