Proposed St. George's renovation a unique situation
A challenging proposal
Blyth -based architect John Rutledge has had two projects dovetail into one with a proposed
addition at St. George's Anglican Church in Goderich. The site requires barrier -free upgrades
and one of the church committees was also looking for space to expand the existing kitchen.
The solution came in closing in a currently outdoor green space to create a barrier -free
washroom and accessory rooms using three exterior walls. Plans for the proposed change can
be seen from Church Street above and a bird's eye view below. (Photo submitted)

Blyth -based architect John
Rutledge is in the midst of tackling
what he calls one of his most
challenging barrier -free conversions
with a major project at St. George's
Anglican Church in Goderich.
Rutledge says the project started
as two separate projects that
eventually amalgamated into a third,
completely new space being created
at the church.
"I've done 10 barrier -free church
renovations so far," Rutledge said in
an interview with The Citizen. "This
one has been unique from the get -
go "
A representative of one of the
church's committees first called
Rutledge in to design a barrier -free
accessible entrance for the church
and washroom.
"That was the first project," he
said. "I designed several options
including a ramp or stair -lift inside
the Parish Hall. The existing
bathroom would need to be enlarged
to become barrier -free."
After a feasibility study, however,
the committee decided they didn't
like making the Parish Hall smaller
as it would impact the space for
functions.
"That project ended there,"
Rutledge said.
Shortly after, the kitchen
committee for the church
approached Rutledge asking him for
a renovation proposal for the long
galley kitchen that exists at the site.
"I designed a renovation proposal
and reviewed it with them," he said.
"At that point, I had been working
independently for the two
committees."
Rutledge was then once again
approached by the barrier -free
committee with a new task: enclose
the area between the Parish Hall and
the Sanctuary, currently a green
outdoor space, and include a
barrier -free washroom and interior
ramp.
"Three of the interior walls with
this project are exterior walls of the
existing building," he said. "I just
have to add a fourth wall."
What originally looked like simply
adding a fourth wall, however, was
