(Quinn Talbot photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen As part of a special awards ceremony at the Brussels Legion on Sunday, Pvt. Angus Duncan Kerr's British World War I medal was returned to his hometown of Brussels. The medal, which honours Kerr's involvement in World War I, during which he was killed in action and his body was never found, was located on eBay and purchased by Dave Thomson. Thomson is a St. George resident who has made a habit of rescuing such honours from private collections to return them to the families and villages that raised their recipients. He contacted Huron East Deputy - Mayor Joe Steffler and his wife Lin when he discovered the medal and, after a few discussions, purchased the medal for 65£, or approximately $110 Canadian. Steffler delivered the medal for the presentation on the weekend, saying it would be displayed alongside other medals the Legion keeps. "It's sure great to get it back home where it belongs," said Joe in an interview with The Citizen. "Kerr is on the Vimy Memorial and the Brussels Cenotaph and it's important to have this back where it belongs." Steffler said Kerr's descendants are still being sought, however, the medal will have a place of honour at the Brussels Legion Branch as long as it can. Legion President Jamie Mitchell agreed, also saying it was important to have the medal back. "It's great to have this piece of the village's history back," he said. "We looked forward to getting it home." Mitchell said he was thankful for Thomson's efforts as there are many medals being sold on the internet and their recipients deserve better. "These aren't being cherished and their meaning isn't being honoured," he said. "We're glad to be able to display this one in the Legion, in the Farmers' Market reviews six-year journey A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 The days of autumn in the past week were a reminder of all the things we have to be thankful for. Driving our roads revealed the harvest of some of the crops that make their way into many of our regularly -used products. Then, we marvelled at the smooth fields and the beauty of the green of the winter crops that are just starting life. The trees of many colours were a great backdrop to our reality of seeing our At the Branch food grow. The drying leaves of corn and beans show us the cycle of life, the plants and ours. Yes, autumn is the season to ponder the cycle of life. The Brussels Farmers' Market Board held its last meeting on Wednesday with a potluck meal and a review of the past six seasons of the market. With vendors that specialize in food, you can be sure the meal was pretty tasty. Rene Richmond with Bob as back-up, has seen to all those details that many miss in the past few years of market life. So with a smile and a sense of relief the market, as we know it, is done. The good news is that "the barn" will be available for next season with new ways of being. Brian Morton gave the group a tour of the barn and the potential is great for a market venue. So on the one hand our open-air market is done, on the other, a permanent spot is nearly ready. New vendors are already interested. So thanks to the board for all the good seasons. It was thank -you time this week as well for the 2017 International Plowing Match (IPM) volunteers. Impressive were their statistics that were reviewed in terms of numbers of volunteers, the calibre of their work, the number of compliments received from visitors, the variety of needed duties, the stamina dealing with mud, the ability to smile at the over 76,000 folks who attended as well as the good things that have happened. Anyone interested in politics will be impressed that Huron County was repaid the loan that helped get the event started. Warden Ginn brought greetings and graciously accepted the cheque. Huron Residential Hospice and Jessica's House also Zone veterans dinner hosted By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a quieter week at the Brussels Legion Branch, but the weekend had lots going on. The Tuesday night Cadets met and assisted Poppy Chairman Sandra Josling Brown with the task of stuffing the mail -out envelopes for the Poppy Campaign. Nearly 1,000 envelopes were stuffed and readied for the mail. Great job Cadets! The door-to-door Poppy canvass will be this Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m. Comrades are urged to come and help by going door-to-door, driving Cadets to our outside communities or to the outer reaches of Brussels. There are also posts at the grocery store, arena and wherever Sandra is allowed to post canvassers. Comrades are reminded that when they joined the Royal Canadian Legion, part of their pledge was to assist, participate and perpetuate all events related to Remembrance. Please come out and assist on Saturday morning for a couple of hours, so many bodies make for a job done quickly. The new "We Remember" sign has been placed at the Legion. The manpower included Jim Brown with help from Scott Somers. They had hoped the boom truck would make it easy, but old-fashioned ladders were used to hang it in time for Remembrance season. The Zone veterans dinner was held at the Branch on Sunday with nearly 70 in attendance. There were about 32 veterans and their spouses or caregivers plus the zone officers and special guests. The guests began to arrive shortly after 1 p.m. and registration was until 2 p.m. The guests were welcomed and the entertainment began. The Just Fun band with Don and Dale Chesher, Ron Howatt and John McDowell played a set and then James Speer presented his award-winning speech entitled "People Say the Darndest Things". Catrina Josling sang a song with the band and then Just Fun returned to play another set. The opening then followed with the piping in of the head table by Brussels Pipe Band Major Don Martin. The group enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner and the meeting followed. A special presentation was then made by Joe and Lin Steffler. They presented the war medal from Pvt. Angus Duncan Kerr to President Jamie Mitchell. "Huron County Proud" was one name suggested for this match. It seems right. We are usually pretty humble about ourselves, but capable, co- operative, willing, dependable, enthusiastic and friendly are what were shown in the planning and at the event. When you think of the memories made at this match, Huron County, the Executive for IPM 2017 and the thousands of volunteers have made many, many good ones. Time for those last-minute fall jobs, perhaps even the Christmas lights if the weather holds. Bye now, Betty G.W. community where Kerr is from, because that is where it will be respected."
