(Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Randy Jones, the celebrated artist and Exeter native, was in Blyth last week to put his name to one of his more notable recent and local works of art. Jones was welcomed to Cowbell Brewing Company to sign a mural of Blyth he first drew for the Blyth 14/19 Cultural Initiative. The company had the drawing turned into a ceiling -high mural in its Drummond Hall. Jones and his wife Susann Ferris - Jones, neither of whom had been to the Cowbell location before, went for a tour with Floyd Herman after speaking about his creation. The piece, which shows Blyth's main street, features a number of its well-known landmarks, traits and establishments. Jones told those assembled at Cowbell that day that his piece took inspiration from a well-known New Yorker cover by Saul Steinberg, entitled "View of the World from 9th Avenue". The piece illustrates New York City's well-known 9th Avenue and continues across the Hudson River to New Jersey and eventually to Asia. He said he enjoyed seeing his piece blown up to the size of the mural, where he could further investigate the intricacies of his pencil work, for example, where he had erased drawings, but faint pencil marks still remained. Jones, who has illustrated for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Economist, is now hard at work on a new book about U.S. President Donald Trump, with an old journalist friend of his, that should be out later this year.
